Chapter 8 - SARAH REFUSED TO BUY HER SILENCE

Sarah rejected the agreement.

Vanessa called within an hour.

Sarah almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

“Why?”

Vanessa sounded genuinely stunned.

“Because I’m not signing something that stops me from protecting Lily.”

“I offered to delete the videos.”

“In exchange for control over what I can say.”

“Because you’ve already made me sound like some child abuser.”

“I haven’t posted anything.”

Vanessa went quiet.

Sarah continued.

“You did that yourself when you uploaded the edited clip.”

“You hit me.”

“I hit your phone out of your hand.”

“And shoved me.”

“Yes.”

Sarah did not dodge it.

“I lost my temper. If I owe the actual cost of something I damaged, send me the repair receipt.”

Silence.

Sarah waited.

“Why exactly is the demand $1,500?”

Vanessa hung up.

That answered nothing.

It changed everything.

The following morning Sarah instructed Naomi to notify Vanessa formally that Sarah would contact relevant commercial partners if necessary to request removal or restriction of advertising content featuring Lily.

It was the most expensive sentence Sarah had ever authorized.

Not in legal fees.

In family consequences.

Patricia called from a number Sarah had not blocked.

“If you contact those companies, you are finished with this family.”

Sarah stood beside the sink.

“Mom, you already said I was dead to you.”

Patricia faltered.

“Don’t be smart.”

“I’m trying to understand the rules.”

“Vanessa employs people.”

“Who?”

“Editors. Assistants. Contractors.”

“And you?”

Patricia became defensive.

“I help.”

“Are you paid?”

“That is none of your business.”

Sarah leaned against the counter.

“The party was my business when you used my daughter.”

Patricia lowered her voice.

“Your father left enough that neither of you ever needed to struggle. I have tried to preserve that for you.”

Sarah almost laughed.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The inheritance.”

“You think I won’t change my estate plan?”

Sarah looked at Lily’s drawings taped to the refrigerator.

“Change it.”

Patricia went silent.

Sarah surprised herself with how little the threat hurt once spoken aloud.

“If getting money after you die requires letting Vanessa humiliate Lily while you coach her from behind the camera, give it all to Vanessa.”

Patricia ended the call.

Sarah cried afterward.

Not because of the money.

Because she understood she had just broken the mechanism her mother had used to pull her back into line for years.

There would be no normal Sunday dinner after this.

No pretending Thanksgiving fixed things.

Sarah sent the sponsor a narrow, factual notice through Naomi.

No accusations about motives.

No emotional language.

It identified Lily as a minor featured in the birthday livestream and stated that Sarah did not consent to commercial use of footage showing Lily after she withdrew from filming.

The company acknowledged receipt.

Two days later Vanessa’s birthday-campaign content disappeared.

The sponsor said only that it was reviewing the matter.

At 10:06 that night Patricia sent Sarah one message:

Do you have any idea what you just cost us?

May you like

Sarah stared at the last word.

Us.
