Chapter 4 - THE FIRST THING SARAH TOOK AWAY

The next morning Sarah hired an attorney.
It cost her a $2,500 retainer she had planned to put toward replacing the furnace before winter.
She hated spending it.
She hated more that Vanessa already had professional representation and Sarah had spent forty-eight hours arguing with strangers in her head.
Her lawyer, Naomi Price, was unimpressed by the family drama.
That was exactly what Sarah needed.
“First,” Naomi said, “stop replying to anyone.”
“I haven’t.”
“Good.”
“Can I post the full video?”
“You can do many things. That doesn’t mean you should.”
Sarah leaned back.
Naomi continued.
“What is your actual goal?”
Sarah answered immediately.
“I want Lily out of Vanessa’s content.”
“Then start there.”
Naomi drafted notices requiring Vanessa to remove commercial content featuring Lily and directing that future use of Lily’s image not occur without Sarah’s authorization.
The legal specifics were less satisfying than Sarah expected.
Not every family video automatically violated a law.
Not every embarrassing post created a lawsuit.
Some permissions Sarah had given in the past were vague.
“You’ve sent her photos yourself,” Naomi said.
Sarah looked embarrassed.
“Yes.”
“That doesn’t give her unlimited permission forever. But it does make this more complicated than ‘she never had consent.’”
Sarah appreciated the correction even though it stung.
She had allowed the boundary to blur.
She could change it now.
She could not pretend she had always protected it.
Sarah sent Vanessa the notice.
She sent Patricia a simpler message.
Lily is not to be photographed or recorded for social media or commercial content. No exceptions.
Patricia responded within two minutes.
You’re punishing everyone because you lost your temper.
Sarah did not reply.
Thirty minutes later:
Your father would be ashamed of this.
Sarah blocked her mother for the afternoon.
The harder conversation happened after school.
“Grandma wants to see you,” Sarah told Lily.
Lily looked down at her sneakers.
“Do I have to?”
“No.”
“Will she be sad?”
“Probably.”
“Will you be mad if I want to?”
Sarah paused.
That was harder.
“No.”
Lily looked relieved.
“I don’t want to right now.”
“Okay.”
The boundary went into place.
No visits.
No filming.
No party at Patricia’s house the following weekend.
The cost arrived quickly.
Patricia removed Sarah from the family vacation group chat.
She told relatives Sarah had forbidden her from seeing Lily.
Vanessa deleted none of the old videos.
Instead she posted another tearful statement insisting she had always loved her niece and that Sarah was weaponizing a child over a sibling argument.
Then Lily showed Sarah one of the two videos Sarah had never seen.
Vanessa had posted it only to paid subscribers.
Lily was six.
She was standing in Patricia’s kitchen, visibly upset because Vanessa had pretended to throw away the stuffed rabbit she slept with.
At the end, Patricia’s voice could be heard laughing behind the camera.

Sarah watched it twice.
Then Lily said, “Grandma was the one who hid Bunny.”
