Chapter 7 - DANIEL’S PHONE WASN’T RECORDING EASTER FOR MEMORIES

Margaret had almost forgotten Daniel raising his phone while Vanessa humiliated her.
Laura hadn’t.
“Do you know whether he recorded you?”
“Yes.”
“Ask him to preserve it.”
Daniel refused at first.
Then his attorney advised him not to delete anything connected to the housing dispute or commercial-use issue.
The video remained.
Margaret never needed some secret hack to obtain it.
Daniel eventually produced a copy during the civil dispute over the occupancy and property use.
It started before Vanessa touched Margaret.
That surprised her.
Daniel had been recording for nearly four minutes.
Why?
His own earlier messages supplied the answer.
Vanessa:
If your mom flips out Sunday, get it on video.
Daniel:
For what?
Vanessa:
Clients keep asking who the older woman is in the photos. If she makes a scene we say she gets confused and we manage the property.
Daniel:
That’s messed up.
Vanessa:
Is it false?
Daniel:
Not exactly.
Margaret stared at the messages.
Not exactly.
Vanessa had planned to frame Margaret as confused.
Not necessarily legally incompetent.
Not commit her somewhere.
Something more ordinary.
More useful.
An elderly mother who lived in the house but did not really control it.
If Margaret objected during a future event, Rose & Reed could explain her away.
Daniel had been uncomfortable.
He recorded anyway.
That changed Margaret’s anger.
For weeks she had treated her son as cowardly.
Passive.
A man who failed to defend her.
He was more involved than that.
He had helped build the story Vanessa needed.
Margaret asked him:
“Do you think I’m confused?”
“No.”
“Then why did you record me?”
Daniel looked away.
“I thought if you saw yourself later—”
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
Margaret’s voice remained low.
“You weren’t recording for me.”
No answer.
She continued.
“You were collecting something to use if I became inconvenient.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t think it would go that far.”
That phrase was becoming the anthem of their family.
May you like
Nobody thought it would go that far.
They only kept walking.
