Chapter 14 - VANESSA RETURNED WITHOUT A SPOON

Nearly a year after Easter, Vanessa came alone.
Margaret almost didn’t open the door.
Then she saw Vanessa through the glass.
Jeans.
Gray sweater.
No makeup.
No pink satin robe.
Margaret opened it halfway.
“What do you need?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“To apologize.”
Margaret waited.
“I was cruel to you.”
“Yes.”
“I shouldn’t have touched you.”
“Yes.”
“I shouldn’t have called the food garbage.”
“Yes.”
“I shouldn’t have used your house.”
Margaret said nothing.
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I thought if I made the business work, everyone would stop treating me like the wife who never stuck with anything.”
There was the truth.
Vanessa had spent fifteen years quitting jobs when bosses frustrated her.
Retail management.
Recruiting.
Real estate.
Social-media consulting.
She was talented.
Ambitious.
Embarrassed by inconsistency.
Rose & Reed was supposed to become proof that she could build something permanent.
Margaret understood that.
It changed nothing about consent.
Vanessa continued.
“I kept thinking you had this huge house and weren’t doing anything with it.”
“It was being my home.”
Vanessa looked down.
“I know how bad that sounds now.”
Margaret almost smiled.
“It sounded bad then too.”
Vanessa nodded.
Then:
“I expected you to forgive me once you calmed down.”
Margaret felt the sentence land.
“Why?”
“Because you always forgave Daniel.”
That was perhaps the most honest thing Vanessa ever said.
Margaret looked around the foyer.
The same house.
Different silence.
“Forgiveness isn’t the same as giving access back.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.”
Margaret did not invite her to move back.
Did not offer the kitchen.
Did not invest in the rebuilt Rose & Reed planning business.
She did something smaller.
“Would you like coffee?”
Vanessa looked surprised.
“Yes.”
May you like
They drank it at Margaret’s kitchen table.
The soup spoon drawer remained closed.
