Chapter 2 - THE RECORD OF A BAD MOTHER

Evan pushed back from the table so quickly his chair struck the wall.

“That’s enough.”

He moved toward Emily, but Margaret stepped between them with Lily against her shoulder.

“You’ll stay where I can see you.”

“This is my home.”

“No,” Margaret said. “It’s the trust’s property, occupied under a family-use agreement. You know the difference.”

Evan’s jaw tightened. Gloria reached for her wine as though the conversation were beneath her, but her thumb kept rubbing the edge of her phone.

Emily explained in fragments.

After Lily’s birth, she had suffered panic attacks and severe insomnia. She had seen a therapist for four months and improved, but Evan began referring to every disagreement as an episode. Gloria moved into the guest suite to “help with the baby” and started keeping notes.

What time Emily woke.

How long Lily cried.

Whether laundry remained unfolded.

How many dishes were in the sink.

At first, Emily thought the notes were for the pediatrician.

Then she found photographs.

Dirty rooms. Half-prepared bottles. Emily asleep on the couch while Gloria held Lily in the foreground.

“There were pictures from nights I begged them to let me sleep,” Emily said. “They’d wake Lily, hand her to me, and start taking notes when I couldn’t calm her.”

Gloria’s expression hardened.

“That’s not what happened. We documented instability because somebody had to protect that child.”

“You left her washing dishes while her baby screamed,” Margaret said.

“We were observing.”

The word sickened her.

Evan pointed toward Margaret’s phone. “Restore my access. You’re interfering with company operations because your daughter doesn’t like household rules.”

Margaret called Daniel on speaker.

Daniel confirmed that Evan’s corporate card and network access were temporarily suspended under a longstanding risk policy. No personal bank accounts had been touched. No one had been evicted. Company devices and records were simply being preserved.

The distinction only made Evan angrier.

He walked toward the hallway.

Emily caught Margaret’s sleeve.

“He’s going for the office computer.”

Daniel heard her.

“Margaret, do not let him remove or destroy company property. Our cybersecurity contractor is locking the device now.”

Evan stopped halfway down the hall.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Margaret turned to Emily. “Where is the file?”

“Not here. He keeps the full version at work.”

Gloria gave a brittle laugh. “There is no full version.”

Emily looked at her mother-in-law.

“Then why did you call it the custody binder last Tuesday?”

May you like

Gloria’s mouth opened, but Evan answered for her.

“Because after tonight, you’re going to need someone else to raise Lily.”
