Chapter 12 - WHAT EACH OF THEM WANTED

The temporary parenting conference took place in a private mediation room rather than a courtroom.
Emily sat beside Rachel.
Evan sat across from her with his attorney. Gloria occupied a chair near the wall, twisting a tissue between her fingers. Margaret attended only as a potential witness and remained silent unless asked a question.
Evan looked rested.
That angered Emily more than if he had looked cruel.
His attorney proposed shared custody, continued residence in the trust-owned house, and dismissal of the coercion allegations. In exchange, Evan would agree not to use Emily’s trust distributions for household expenses without written consent.
Rachel almost laughed.
“You’re offering to stop doing what he never had authority to do.”
Evan leaned forward.
“I’m trying to keep Lily’s life stable.”
“You woke her to make me fail,” Emily said.
“No. You were already failing.”
Emily’s expression barely changed.
“Then why did North Elm pay a custody consultant four months before I left?”
“Because my mother was worried.”
Gloria looked up.
Evan continued.
“Emily was overwhelmed. Her mother controlled every financial decision. I was trying to create options.”
Margaret finally spoke.
“You stole from my company.”
“I took money I believed I’d earned after years of being treated like hired help.”
“You were hired help,” Margaret said. “A well-paid executive employee. Not an owner.”
The humiliation showed in his face. Beneath the entitlement was an older injury: he had married into a family whose wealth made him feel temporary. Every room, title, and car reminded him that someone else could revoke access.
It explained him.
It did not excuse him.
Gloria began to cry.
“My husband left me with debt,” she said. “Evan said North Elm would be repaid after he got equity. He said the custody plan would make Margaret negotiate.”
Emily looked at her.
“You helped make me look dangerous.”
“I thought you’d sign the agreement and everybody would calm down.”
“You watched him hurt me.”
Gloria lowered her eyes.
Evan’s attorney asked for a break, but Evan refused.
He offered to resign from Hartwell if Emily withdrew her request for supervised contact and stated that Gloria’s notes were legitimate.
Rachel closed her folder.
“So your career is negotiable, but the false custody record isn’t.”
Evan looked toward Gloria.
She stared back at him as though hearing the bargain for the first time.
“You told me the custody case was only leverage,” she said.
Evan’s voice sharpened. “Mom, stop talking.”
Gloria stood.
“No. You said we’d never actually take Lily.”
The meeting ended before anyone signed an agreement.
Outside the room, Gloria asked to speak with Rachel without Evan present.

She was finally ready to explain what she had done.
The question was whether she would put it under oath.
