The second session required both to name each debt. Wyatt listed the mortgage, HOA fee, car note, and nothing else. The counselor compared it with deposits he had authorized. Forty percent of each paycheck had gone to a treatment center in Wisconsin, then Harper’s college after Renee lost work. Wyatt admitted Renee relapsed last winter. Claire had refused to finance a third private program, so he covered it himself with overtime, then retirement loans. He cleared the island after every call with Renee to hide his panic. That cleared island hid debt, not peace. “For now” meant until the debt surfaced. Harper’s tuition was not merely payment for provoking Claire; it was the last promise keeping Renee from taking her daughter out of school. Wyatt had begun by protecting his sister. Then shame turned protection into a plan to force a divorce, claim marital equity, and pay debts without confessing. Claire’s control had given him a grievance. His fear had turned that grievance into betrayal.
