Chapter 27 - THE APOLOGY I REFUSED

Grant asked to meet me at the coffee shop where we had gone on our first date.
I chose a different place.
He arrived carrying a letter.
“I’ve been working with a therapist,” he said.
“I’m glad.”
“I wrote down everything I did.”
He pushed the letter across the table.
I did not touch it.
“I concealed Liam’s diagnosis. I ignored the warning signs. I let my mother make decisions that belonged to us. I failed to call you when he became sick. After he died, I protected myself by allowing you to believe the worst about yourself.”
His voice shook.
“I had an affair while our son was in danger. I lied to Brooke. I hid the mutation before Maisie was born. I delayed taking her to the hospital.”
The list sounded unbearable when spoken without explanations.
“I am sorry,” he said.
“I believe you feel sorry.”
“That isn’t the same as forgiveness.”
“No.”
He looked at the untouched letter.
“Will you read it?”
“Not today.”
“I need you to know I understand.”
“You understand because consequences forced you to look.”
“That’s still understanding.”
“Maybe.”
He leaned forward.
“I loved Liam.”
“I know.”
“I loved you.”
“I know that too.”
His eyes filled.
“Then why does it sound like none of it matters?”
“Because love is not a defense against what you did.”
Grant sat back.
Brooke’s divorce was nearly final. His contact with Maisie remained supervised, though he had begun following every medical instruction exactly.
He was trying.
That mattered for Maisie.
It did not create a debt I had to repay with forgiveness.
“You may become a safer father,” I said. “You may become an honest man. I hope you do.”
“But?”
“You do not become my husband again. You do not become the person I call when I’m afraid. You do not get access to me as proof that you have changed.”
He nodded slowly.
I stood to leave.
“Mara.”
I looked back.
“What do I do with the letter?”
“Keep it.”
May you like
“Why?”
“Because your apology is supposed to remind you what you did. It is not supposed to become another burden I carry.”
