Chapter 21 - THE FATHER ON THE WITNESS STAND

Grant testified at the renewed custody hearing under oath.

Brooke’s attorney asked about Liam first.

“Did you know your son carried a potentially fatal mutation?”

“Yes.”

“Did you inform his mother?”

“No.”

“Did you follow the cardiologist’s recommendations?”

“No.”

“Did you tell your second wife about the mutation before she became pregnant?”

“No.”

Grant’s attorney objected repeatedly, but the answers remained.

“Why did you conceal the condition from Brooke?”

Grant looked toward her.

“I was afraid she would decide not to have children with me.”

Brooke’s face did not change.

The attorney continued.

“When Maisie developed a fever, did you delay seeking care?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I thought it would come down.”

“Did your mother advise you not to overreact?”

“Yes.”

“Did you consider the possibility that Maisie had inherited the same mutation?”

Grant’s voice became almost inaudible.

“Yes.”

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

The judge ordered silence.

Brooke’s attorney stepped closer.

“You knew your infant daughter might have a condition triggered by fever, and you still waited?”

“I didn’t want to believe it was happening again.”

“That is not the same as not knowing.”

Grant looked toward me.

“I know.”

Then came the question no one expected.

“Did you begin your relationship with Brooke before or after Liam’s death?”

Grant’s attorney stood.

“Relevance?”

Brooke’s attorney held up financial and phone records.

“It relates to a pattern of concealment and credibility.”

The judge allowed the question.

Grant stared at the witness stand.

“Before.”

Brooke’s head turned slowly.

“How long before?” the attorney asked.

“Two months.”

I felt nothing at first.

Then the dates aligned.

While Liam was waiting for cardiac follow-up, Grant had been meeting Brooke.

While I worked extra shifts to cover his travel, he was lying to both of us.

Brooke stood abruptly.

“You told me you were separated.”

Grant closed his eyes.

“We were having problems.”

“We were not separated,” I said.

The judge warned me not to speak from the gallery.

Grant’s affair had not begun after grief destroyed our marriage.

It had begun before Liam died.

He had used our son’s death to hide the timeline.

By the end of the hearing, Brooke received temporary sole custody.

Grant’s visits remained supervised.

As he left the witness stand, Brooke removed her wedding ring.

She placed it on the table in front of him.

“You didn’t leave Mara for me,” she said. “You lied to both of us and waited to see which life survived.”
