Chapter 9 - WHAT COLLAPSE ACTUALLY LOOKED LIKE

Harold’s company did not disappear overnight.

That would have been easier.

Instead, the lender appointed an outside restructuring adviser.

New spending required approval.

A planned second phase was suspended.

Harold remained chief executive temporarily but lost control over several financial decisions.

Payroll continued.

Some contractors were delayed.

Two senior employees left voluntarily.

Victoria told friends Daniel had “vindictively sabotaged” the company after a wedding misunderstanding.

Margaret heard the story at a Boston charity luncheon.

She called Daniel.

“Do you want me to correct people?”

“No.”

“They’re making you sound insane.”

“Let them.”

“You’ve changed.”

Daniel almost said he had not.

Then remembered how many years he had spent quietly managing everyone’s impression of the Whitmore family.

Maybe Chloe had understood that weakness because she shared it.

Meanwhile Harborcrest contacted the Bellamys about outstanding wedding charges.

Daniel paid only the invoices he had personally authorized.

Harold disputed the rest.

One vendor was the temporary staffing company.

Their banquet director, Elena Marquez, had been working the night Eleanor was humiliated.

She had also been one of the people who warned Eleanor before the wedding.

Daniel asked if she would speak with his attorney.

Elena agreed on one condition.

“This isn’t about your divorce.”

“It isn’t.”

She produced emails from Victoria instructing staff managers to remove certain charges from guest-facing invoices.

Nothing criminal.

Mostly tacky.

But one message stood out.

Victoria had objected to the staff gratuity pool and demanded it be reduced by eighteen thousand dollars.

When Elena refused, Harold personally called.

He told her the Whitmore family would cover it later.

Daniel never knew.

The Bellamys were promising his money even to people they considered beneath them.

Daniel forwarded everything to Russell.

Then Elena added something.

“Mrs. Bellamy wasn’t the one who worried me most.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who was?”

“Chloe.”

“Why?”

Elena hesitated.

“Because she always knew exactly when you entered the room.”

May you like

Daniel felt the answer before she gave it.

“She changed when you were there.”
