Chapter 9 - The Record That Made Margaret Look Unreliable
Evelyn treated the board minutes more cautiously than Dominic wanted.
“They don't make Margaret incompetent,” she said. “They don't transfer authority. But they could influence how other people interpret later disputes.”
Margaret looked offended.
“So if I complain that I never approved the loan—”
“Lucian can point to months of records suggesting you were already forgetting financial conversations.”
Dominic felt sick.
The deception was more calculated than the loan itself.
But Evelyn made them slow down.
A record could be manipulated without every entry being false.
They checked each incident.
The February meeting Margaret supposedly missed had been rescheduled from ten in the morning to three in the afternoon.
The notice went to an old email address Margaret rarely used.
Valeria had sent it.
The December documents had been mailed to the mansion rather than Margaret’s residence.
The January budget call was harder.
Margaret had asked the same question twice.
She admitted it.
“I was distracted. The furnace repairman was standing in my hallway.”
One truthful incident had made the false ones more believable.
Then Martin found something else.
Beginning in January, Valeria had asked staff to copy her on scheduling communications involving Margaret.
The request sounded administrative.
By March, Valeria controlled nearly every meeting invitation Margaret received from the company.
Dominic confronted her at the special meeting that evening.
Lucian attended with his own attorney.
Valeria sat beside him.
Dominic placed the minutes on the table.
“You were building a record against her.”
Lucian shook his head.
“We were documenting legitimate concerns.”
“By sending meetings to an email she didn't use?”
“Valeria handled scheduling.”
Dominic turned to her.
Valeria said nothing.
Margaret did.
“Were you trying to have me declared incompetent?”
Lucian's attorney immediately interrupted.
“No one should answer a legal characterization like that.”
Margaret looked at Lucian instead.
He would not meet her eyes.
That answer was worse.
Dominic moved to suspend Lucian’s borrowing authority.
Before the vote, the bank’s relationship manager joined by video.
He explained that a management suspension would trigger a standard review, not automatic default.
Relief moved across Margaret’s face.
Then he added something no one expected.
The bank had already begun reviewing the facility.
“Why?”
The banker looked uncomfortable.
“Because yesterday we received notice of a dispute regarding the validity of the collateral consent.”
Dominic assumed Evelyn had contacted them.
She hadn't.
Neither had Margaret.
The banker continued.
“The notice came from Bellamy Estate Holdings.”
Everyone looked toward Lucian.
Lucian looked at Valeria.
Valeria folded her hands in front of her.
“I sent it.”
Lucian turned on her.
“You did what?”

For the first time since the confrontation, Valeria was no longer protecting him.
And the person who had helped create the deception was now the person preventing Lucian from continuing to use it.
