Chapter 14 - The Last Thing Margaret Offered Him

Lucian returned the next afternoon.

The family met in the reception room.

The new wine display had not been installed.

The empty wall made the room look wider.

Valeria stood near the windows.

She and Lucian had arrived separately.

Dominic noticed but did not ask.

Lucian carried the transition agreement.

Unsigned.

He placed it on the table.

“If I sign this, I'm finished.”

“As managing director,” Dominic said.

“Same thing.”

Margaret shook her head.

“No. It only feels like the same thing because you made that job your entire identity.”

Lucian looked at her sharply.

There was anger there.

And something beneath it that looked younger.

Margaret continued.

“I watched Charles do that for forty years. Every threat to the company became a threat to him personally. Every disagreement became disloyalty. Every problem became something he had to solve before anyone else could see it.”

Lucian glanced toward Charles’s portrait above the mantel.

“You admired him.”

“I loved him.”

Margaret let the distinction sit between them.

“I also helped him hide too much because I thought protecting his pride protected the family.”

Dominic looked at his mother.

She had never said that before.

“I won't do it again.”

Lucian asked what happened if he refused to resign.

Dominic answered.

The voting members would begin formal removal proceedings. The bank review would continue. The financial report would still document the collateral issue.

Lucian could fight.

It would cost everyone time and money.

Margaret offered another option.

“Sign. Cooperate. Help repair what you actually know how to repair.”

Lucian gave a bitter smile.

“And then what? Sunday dinner?”

“No.”

Margaret's answer surprised all three of them.

“I am not offering you your old place in this family.”

Lucian's smile disappeared.

“I am offering you a chance not to make the final thing you do here another lie.”

He looked toward Valeria.

She did not move closer.

That seemed to decide something.

Lucian picked up the pen.

He signed the resignation first.

Then the authorization to list the guesthouse.

Then the cooperation agreement.

When he finished, he pushed the pages toward Evelyn.

Dominic had expected satisfaction.

He felt none.

Lucian stood and reached into his jacket.

Dominic's body tensed automatically.

Lucian removed a brass key.

The managing director’s office.

He placed it beside the papers.

Margaret looked at the key for a long moment.

Then she said, “Thank you.”

Not forgiveness.

Not reconciliation.

Just acknowledgment that, at the last possible point, Lucian had finally stopped making someone else pay for his fear.

When he walked toward the door, he paused beside the empty space where the wine display had once stood.

He looked at Margaret.

May you like

She did not call him back.

And for the first time, Lucian left the Bellamy mansion without knowing whether he would ever again be invited inside as family.
