Chapter 8 - The Result Daniel Could Never Unread

Thomas Avery was Daniel’s biological father.

The probability exceeded 99.9 percent.

Charles showed no paternal-uncle relationship.

The first private report had been essentially correct.

Margaret had known before the family party.

Maybe longer.

Daniel stared at the verified laboratory result.

Then closed the laptop.

He did not cry.

Not immediately.

He walked outside.

I gave him space.

Thirty minutes later I found him sitting on the porch steps.

“My whole name comes from a man I’m not related to.”

“Your name came from the man who raised you.”

“That sounds like something people say because they don’t know what else to say.”

“Probably.”

He almost smiled.

Then the grief arrived.

Not over Thomas.

Over Robert.

Daniel remembered fishing trips.

Learning to drive.

Robert sitting in the front row at college graduation.

Robert holding Lily at our wedding and saying, “Don’t let anyone tell you stepkids count less.”

That memory made Daniel cry.

I sat beside him.

Robert had known.

Maybe not with laboratory certainty.

But enough.

And he had chosen Daniel.

Over and over.

The accredited result also made Margaret’s actions toward Lily almost impossible to defend.

She had privately learned her son was biologically unrelated to the Hayes paternal line.

Instead of telling him, she used Lily’s lack of Hayes DNA as a weapon.

Why?

Daniel needed the answer.

He called Margaret.

“I know.”

Silence.

Then:

“Daniel…”

“Thomas is my biological father.”

She began crying.

“Please come here.”

“No.”

“I need to explain.”

“You had four months.”

“I was trying to protect your father.”

“He’s dead.”

“I was protecting what he built.”

There it was again.

The name.

The foundation.

The appearance.

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“So you punished Lily.”

“I did not punish her.”

“You crossed her name off a family invitation.”

“She isn’t part of the Hayes bloodline.”

Daniel laughed once.

Neither are you, he could have said.

Instead:

“Neither was I.”

Margaret stopped.

Daniel continued.

“And Dad knew enough to choose me anyway.”

She whispered:

“You don’t understand what would happen if everyone knew.”

That sentence revealed her true priority.

Not Daniel’s emotional wellbeing.

Not Lily’s.

The family image.

Daniel ended the call.

Then he made an irreversible decision.

He resigned temporarily from the Hayes Foundation board.

Not because anyone forced him.

Because Margaret chaired it, and he refused to let her use the organization as leverage while he decided what family meant to him.

His resignation immediately created questions.

Relatives called.

May you like

Donors noticed.

The secret could no longer remain contained indefinitely.
