Chapter 1 - The Name Crossed Out at My Daughter’s Party

I found Lily crying behind a latched garden gate while the rest of the family laughed inside.

Rain had darkened the stone patio beneath her white flats.

Her pale pink dress was damp at the hem.

“Mommy…”

I opened the gate.

Lily threw herself against me.

“Am I really not yours?”

My chest went cold.

“Who told you that?”

She looked toward the mansion.

Before she answered, I saw the invitation pinned beside the patio door.

HAYES FAMILY SPRING DINNER.

Every relative had been listed beneath it.

Someone had drawn a thick black line through Lily’s name.

Not accidentally.

Deliberately.

Margaret stepped outside.

Perfect ivory dress.

Perfect pearls.

Not one trace of shame.

“She was never meant to be included.”

I pulled Lily behind me.

“What did you say to her?”

Margaret tilted her chin.

“The truth.”

Then she looked directly at my daughter.

“Blood makes a family. Pretending doesn’t.”

Lily was my biological daughter from my first marriage.

Daniel had raised her since she was three.

He had never adopted her legally because Lily still received survivor benefits connected to her late biological father, Michael, and we had chosen not to disturb arrangements that were working.

But inside our home, Daniel was Dad.

Margaret had always hated that.

I slapped her once.

Not hard enough to knock her down.

Hard enough to wipe away the smile.

Daniel appeared in the doorway.

“Emma!”

I didn’t look at him.

“Say that about my daughter again.”

Margaret straightened her pearls.

Then she smiled.

“DNA doesn’t lie.”

I had been waiting for those words.

I reached into my handbag and pulled out the folded report I had received that morning.

Then I threw it at her feet.

“Exactly.”

Margaret picked it up.

Page one contained the result she had already used against Lily.

Page two did not.

Her face changed.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What is that?”

Margaret tried to fold the page.

I grabbed it first.

Daniel saw another name printed beneath the laboratory number.

THOMAS AVERY.

He frowned.

“Why is Uncle Thomas on a DNA report?”

Margaret stopped breathing.

I looked directly at her.

“Tell him whose DNA you really tested.”
