Chapter 4 - THE BRUNCH WHERE THE FAMILY SMILED

Carmen refused to cancel the post-wedding brunch.
By Sunday morning, more than seventy relatives and business associates had gathered in the private dining room of the Crescent Club. Carmen told everyone Sofia was resting after a “hysterical episode” and that Javier was protecting his new wife from public embarrassment.
She also announced that Sofia had attacked her.
Carmen wore a silk scarf around her neck and a wrist brace despite having no documented injury.
She stood near a wall of white roses, accepting sympathy.
“We will love Sofia through her illness,” she told Javier’s employer. “That is what family does.”
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Sofia entered between Alexander and me.
Her bruised cheek was uncovered. Her wrist was wrapped, and she walked slowly beneath the weight of her injuries, but she wore a simple black dress instead of hiding beneath another layer of bridal white.
Every conversation stopped.
Carmen’s smile remained in place for two seconds too long.
Javier hurried toward us.
“Sofia, you shouldn’t be here.”
“Why?” she asked. “Because people can see my face?”
He lowered his voice. “You’re making this worse.”
“For whom?”
Carmen approached with open arms.
“Sweetheart, you’ve been through such confusion.”
Sofia stepped back.
“Don’t touch me.”
Phones rose around the room.
Carmen noticed them and softened her voice.
“You attacked me after drinking too much. We decided not to press charges because you’re family.”
Detective Morgan entered behind us with two financial-crimes investigators.
Carmen stopped speaking.
Alexander placed the forged transfer papers on the nearest table.
“Would you like to explain why your attorney prepared these before the wedding?”
Javier looked at Carmen.
“You said those were destroyed.”
The words escaped before he could stop them.
A ripple moved through the room.
Carmen’s face tightened.
“Do not speak without our lawyer.”
Sofia held up her phone.
“He was outside the suite while you attacked me.”
“You can’t prove what happened inside that room.”
Detective Morgan activated a speaker.
Carmen’s recorded voice filled the dining room.
Hold her hand flat.
Someone dropped a glass.
Elena began crying near the back wall.
Javier’s employer stepped away from him.
Carmen looked around at the relatives who had believed her performance.
“That recording is incomplete.”
“Then complete it,” Sofia said. “Tell them why six women were holding me down.”
Carmen pointed toward Alexander.
“This man abandoned you. Now he appears with lawyers and pretends to be a father?”
Sofia’s voice shook, but she did not look away.
“Javier blocked his calls. He sent messages pretending to be my mother. He isolated me because he knew Dad could stop the transfer.”
The financial investigators displayed account records showing that Carmen’s family development company was close to foreclosure. They owed more than six million dollars on an unfinished luxury project outside Fort Worth.
Sofia’s condo was supposed to become collateral for a rescue loan.
The wedding was not the beginning of a family.
It was a closing date.
Javier moved toward the side exit.
Detective Morgan blocked him.
“You’re not under arrest yet,” she said. “But leaving would be an interesting decision.”
Javier turned toward Sofia.
“I loved you.”
“You studied me.”
“My family was desperate.”
“So you offered them mine?”
His mouth opened, but no answer came.
Carmen’s control finally broke.
“That condo could have saved all of us!”
Sofia looked at her mother-in-law.
“It was never yours.”
“Marriage makes property family property.”
Alexander stepped beside his daughter.
“Not in Texas. Not under this trust. And not through assault.”
Carmen stared at him.
“What are you going to do?”
Alexander’s voice remained calm.
“Nothing you can use to make yourself the victim.”
May you like
He looked toward Detective Morgan.
“We’re going to let the evidence do it.”
