Chapter 2 - THE HUSBAND OUTSIDE THE DOOR

Javier knocked again, gentler this time.
“Mrs. Bennett, I know Sofia’s in there. She’s confused and hurt. Let me help her.”
Alexander rose and moved between Sofia and the entrance.
“Do not open that door,” he said.
I looked through the security camera.
Javier stood in the hallway wearing his black wedding suit. His tie was missing, and there was a smear of lipstick on his collar that did not match Sofia’s.
Beside him stood his younger sister, Elena, still wearing her dark bridesmaid dress. She looked pale and frightened.
Javier leaned toward the camera.
“Clara, this is a private family matter.”
Alexander’s jaw tightened at the sound of his voice.
“That’s him?”
Sofia nodded from the floor.
“He told his mother not to damage my face.”
Alexander closed his eyes for half a second.
Then he opened the door with the security chain still fastened.
Javier’s expression changed when he saw him.
“Who are you?”
“Her father.”
Javier took a step backward.
He had never met Alexander. During the three years he dated Sofia, Javier claimed he respected her wish not to discuss the father who had supposedly abandoned her.
“Colonel Brooks,” he said quickly. “Sir, this isn’t what it looks like.”
“It looks like my daughter ran through downtown Dallas in a torn wedding dress because she was afraid of her husband.”
“She had an emotional episode.”
Behind me, Sofia made a sound like something inside her had torn again.
Javier continued, using the smooth voice he reserved for bankers and older relatives.
“She became violent when my mother asked her to sign a routine marital document.”
“Routine?” I asked.
“A temporary transfer. For tax purposes.”
Alexander looked toward the paper in my hand.
“Then why was she locked in a room?”
Javier’s eyes flickered.
“She wasn’t.”
Elena whispered, “Javier.”
He turned sharply. “Stay out of this.”
Elena pulled away from him.
“I heard her screaming.”
Javier’s face hardened.
“You were drunk.”
“I was outside the suite. You stood there while Mom and her friends went inside.”
“They were calming her down.”
“You told them where she kept the condo documents.”
Javier reached for Elena’s arm, but Alexander opened the door and stepped between them with such force that Javier stumbled back.
“Touch either woman,” Alexander said, “and you’ll explain it from the floor.”
The elevator opened again.
Two Dallas police officers entered the hallway with a paramedic.
Javier immediately raised his hands.
“Thank God. My wife is having a mental-health crisis.”
He sounded relieved because he believed the police would see a damaged bride, an emotional mother, and an unfamiliar older man.
He did not know Sofia had recorded the attack.
One officer entered the apartment while the other separated Javier and Elena.
Sofia was transported to Baylor University Medical Center. Doctors documented a concussion, two cracked ribs, a sprained wrist, and extensive bruising consistent with multiple people restraining her.
She repeated the same account to a forensic nurse and a detective.
Carmen had entered the honeymoon suite carrying a property-transfer document. When Sofia refused to sign, Carmen ordered the other women to hold her down.
Javier remained outside.
Sofia heard him say, “She’ll sign when she realizes no one is coming.”
The detective took custody of the document and recorder.
Carmen’s attorney called before sunrise.
He claimed Sofia had attacked her mother-in-law during a dispute over wedding expenses.
By seven, videos were circulating in family group chats showing Carmen crying in the hotel lobby while Javier comforted her.
“We welcomed Sofia like a daughter,” Carmen told relatives. “She humiliated us after we spent a fortune on her wedding.”
Javier sent me a message.
RETURN MY WIFE, OR I WILL FILE FOR AN EMERGENCY PSYCHIATRIC HOLD.
Alexander read it over my shoulder.
“He prepared this.”
“Prepared what?”
“The claim that she’s unstable. That doesn’t begin on a wedding night.”
Sofia heard him from the hospital bed.
“He’s been telling people I forget things,” she said. “He took me to a therapist last year.”
“Why?”
“He said I had anxiety. He always came into the sessions with me.”
May you like
Alexander stared at Javier’s message.
“They weren’t only after the condo. They were building a way to take it after she said no.”
