Chapter 4 - The Decision That Split the Marriage in Two
Ava filed for legal separation four days after leaving the hospital.
She did not wait for the assault investigation to decide the marriage.
Carmen helped freeze new withdrawals from the couple’s joint investment account, redirect Ava’s salary, and notify their bank that neither spouse could pledge the Oak Brook house without written agreement.
The house was jointly titled.
Unlike the physical abuse case, there would be no easy argument over who owned what.
Every practical decision would take time.
Daniel reacted through his lawyer.
He agreed to remain outside the house temporarily.
He refused to provide voluntary access to Whitaker Management’s business records.
And he accused Ava of using confidential hospital information to attack his company during a marital dispute.
That accusation was dangerous.
Ava’s career depended on handling protected information correctly.
Michael Reeves ordered an independent review of her access logs.
Ava handed over her laptop and work phone.
For three days, she could do nothing except heal and wait while strangers examined whether she had abused the job she spent years building.
The review confirmed she had followed procedure.
She viewed only records assigned to her before the conflict was identified, documented Daniel’s name immediately, and removed herself.
That protected Ava.
It did not identify Northstar’s true owners.
The first active clue came from Lena.
Not because she investigated anything.
Because she recognized the name Mercer House.
“My mother used to get home health equipment through them after her stroke,” she said.
Lena’s mother died eighteen months earlier.
She found old insurance statements in a filing cabinet.
One showed Northstar Mobility billing for a powered standing lift three months after Lena’s mother had entered hospice.
Lena had never seen the equipment.
Another charge appeared two weeks after her death.
Ava did not touch the records.
She told Lena to send them directly to the hospital’s outside counsel.
That distinction mattered.
This was no longer Ava collecting evidence against her husband.
It was an institutional investigation moving without her.
Daniel still believed stopping Ava might stop the problem.
He called Carmen with an offer.
He would agree to an uncontested divorce, pay Ava’s medical expenses, and let her keep the Oak Brook house.
In exchange, Ava would sign a statement saying the kitchen incident resulted from an “emotionally charged family argument” and that she had no personal knowledge connecting Daniel to Northstar.
Carmen read the proposal twice.
“He’s offering you the house.”
Ava looked down at the dressing covering her shoulder.
“He thinks I still control whether Northstar survives.”
Carmen nodded.
Ava declined.
Two hours later, Vivian called Lena.

She asked only one question.
“Did your mother ever receive a standing lift?”
