Chapter 10 - The Person Daniel Had Been Preparing to Sacrifice
The major twist came from Richard Whitaker’s old laptop.
Emily found it in storage and provided it voluntarily through investigators.
The hard drive contained drafts, financial models, and years of family-business emails.
Richard had participated in questionable billing.
He had also tried to stop it.
The final six months before his stroke told a different story from Vivian’s version.
Richard discovered Daniel had expanded the duplicate-invoice practice beyond delayed corrections. Northstar’s predecessor was billing for equipment that was never ordered at all.
Richard wrote:
This is not timing anymore. These are invented deliveries.
Daniel replied:
We reverse enough each quarter to keep exposure controlled.
Richard:
There is no controlled fraud.
Three earlier clues changed meaning at once.
Richard’s argument with Daniel on the night of his stroke was not about a failing company. He had ordered Daniel to stop the billing.
The phrase “Dad’s pattern” in Daniel’s kitchen call referred not to Richard inventing the scheme but to the accounting pattern Richard had discovered and documented.
Vivian’s $410,000 “loan” funded Northstar after Richard refused to provide more business capital.
Then investigators found the worst email.
It was dated two weeks after Richard’s funeral.
Daniel wrote Vivian:
If this ever comes back, Ava is our firewall. She understands compliance, she has access to the hospital world, and anything touching our household accounts can be explained as her consulting.
Vivian replied:
She’ll leave if she knows.
Daniel:
Then she never knows.
The false $18,000 consulting invoice was not random bookkeeping.
It was the beginning of a contingency plan.
Daniel had married a prosecutor and later watched her move into healthcare investigations.
Instead of stopping the scheme, he used her credibility as camouflage.
If Northstar remained hidden, her reputation made the family look respectable.
If it was exposed, her name could create doubt about who knew what.
The oil attack reinterpreted itself too.
Daniel and Vivian were no longer merely trying to frighten Ava after discovering her notes.
They were facing the collapse of a plan in which Ava had been useful only as long as she remained unaware.
The investigators also recovered Daniel’s draft incident statement created hours before dinner.
Ava became agitated during discussion of confidential work matters, slipped near stove, mother attempted to assist.
The “accident” version existed before Vivian threw the oil.
Daniel had planned a confrontation and prepared the explanation.
Whether he intended the exact injury Vivian caused remained uncertain.
His preparation for the lie did not.
Carmen placed the draft in front of Ava.
“What do you want to do with this?”
Ava looked at Daniel’s typed description of an accident that had not yet happened when he wrote it.
“Everything lawful,” she said.
