Chapter 6 - THE BOARDROOM WITHOUT VOWS

The hearing took place at Vale Meridian’s headquarters six days after the wedding.

Adrian arrived with a brace beneath his jaw and an attorney beside him. Vanessa wore a dark business suit and carried no visible jewelry.

Dad sat near the back with separate counsel.

I took my usual chair at the end of the table, though I no longer held the authority attached to it.

Vanessa spoke first.

She claimed Adrian manipulated the vendor process and coerced her into altering reports. She described their relationship as an affair she had attempted to end.

Adrian laughed.

“You designed the companies.”

“Because you ordered me to.”

“You wrote the succession agreement.”

“To keep the business functioning after you said Victoria was unstable.”

Neither seemed to understand how ordinary their lies sounded once the documents were displayed beside them.

The forensic accountant presented authentication logs, payment records, draft agreements and recovered emails. The building manager confirmed Vanessa’s visits to my townhouse. Dad acknowledged authorizing them.

Then the board’s attorney displayed the message instructing Adrian to hide my injuries more carefully.

Vanessa’s composure broke.

“That was taken out of context.”

“What context makes it acceptable?” one director asked.

She looked toward me.

“You stayed with him. You knew what he was.”

“Yes,” I said.

The room shifted.

I did not defend my silence.

“I stayed because I believed I could protect the company while privately building evidence. That decision exposed employees, strengthened their scheme and allowed Adrian to hurt me again. I was wrong.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“You stayed because you loved me.”

“I did.”

His expression softened for one dangerous second, as though love could still be turned into permission.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

“You wanted me frightened enough to sign.”

“I wanted us to have a future.”

“A future where you controlled whether I was competent?”

He glanced at Vanessa.

“She said the agreement was temporary.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Don’t put this on me.”

Adrian’s voice rose.

“You told me Arthur would support it. You said the doctors were ready. You said once the wedding was done, Victoria couldn’t stop us.”

His attorney touched his arm.

Adrian pulled away.

The words were not a complete confession, and no one treated them as one. They were, however, consistent with the recovered evidence and his prior messages.

The outside directors voted to terminate both Adrian and Vanessa for cause and refer the audit to state and federal authorities.

They also accepted my continued leave while an independent review examined my own oversight.

Dad submitted his resignation from every remaining company position.

As security approached, Vanessa looked at me.

“You think they’ll give the company back to you after this?”

“No,” I said. “They’ll decide whether I earned the right to lead it again.”

That answer disturbed her more than revenge would have.

It meant she could no longer define my survival as a competition between us.
