Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE TAKEOVER

Vanessa had not planned to share Vale Meridian with Adrian.

She planned to use him until the wedding made me vulnerable enough to remove.

The succession draft granted Adrian temporary control if I were declared incapacitated. A side agreement, prepared three months later, required him to appoint Vanessa as chief executive and voting proxy within ten days.

In exchange, she promised to protect him from liability connected to the vendor payments.

That promise was worthless.

The shell-company contracts, transfer instructions and altered financial reports all carried Adrian’s electronic approvals. Vanessa had structured the payments so that he appeared to be the person directing them.

She controlled the accounting entries.

He controlled the destination accounts.

If the scheme became public, she intended to portray herself as a finance officer obeying a coercive executive.

A separate email showed that she had already approached a competitor about selling Vale Meridian’s most profitable software division after gaining control.

Adrian believed the stolen money would preserve his real-estate project and make him a powerful company owner.

Vanessa intended to sell the company, take her share and leave him with the criminal exposure.

Three earlier clues now made sense.

She insisted the continuity agreement be signed before the reception.

She arranged the doctors who would evaluate my supposed incapacity.

She stood in the front pew rather than beside me as a member of the wedding party because she wanted to be seen as an independent witness if I broke down.

The public insult was part of the plan.

They needed me angry, humiliated and irrational in front of influential people.

Adrian’s violence had served the same purpose in private. Vanessa repeatedly told him that fear made me easier to control and that visible distress would support their medical narrative.

The twist did not make Adrian another victim.

He had bruised me, threatened me and stolen company funds because control felt more valuable than love.

But Vanessa had taught him how each act could become useful.

The audit team recovered messages in which Adrian complained that the attacks were becoming dangerous.

Vanessa answered:

Then stop leaving marks where she can hide them. The wedding solves everything.

My black folio had prevented the final signatures.

It had not repaired the damage already done.

The board scheduled an emergency hearing. Adrian and Vanessa would be allowed to respond before the directors sought permanent removal and referred the audit to prosecutors.

My attorney advised me to stay away.

“You’re a witness, and emotions will be high.”

“I’m also the shareholder whose authority they tried to steal.”

Attending carried risk. Adrian might provoke me again. Vanessa might use my wedding kick to argue that I was violent.

Staying away would allow them to explain my absence as instability.

I chose to attend under one condition.

My father could not sit beside me.

For once, I needed everyone in the room to understand that I was not there because Arthur Vale had decided to protect his daughter.

I was there because I had finally protected myself.
