Chapter 9 - WHEN THE FAMILY STORY LEFT THE FAMILY
Once Cassidy filed the protection petition, details could no longer remain contained inside the Mercer family.
Her hospital documentation went to investigators through proper legal requests.
Lydia’s school established a restricted pickup list.
The child advocacy center recommended that Lydia begin counseling with a therapist experienced in family violence.
Frank’s office manager had to answer questions about Trent’s access to schedules and company information.
Cassidy hated every part of it.
Not because she wanted to protect Trent.
Because each procedure turned a private humiliation into something another stranger had to examine.
Trent’s lawyer tried to use that discomfort.
He proposed that Cassidy withdraw parts of her petition in exchange for Trent voluntarily staying away from the house.
Cassidy refused.
Then her older sister, Megan, drove from Helena.
Megan had defended Trent for months.
“He was always nice to me,” she had said after Cassidy first hinted there were problems.
Now Megan carried her phone into Frank’s kitchen.
“I need to show you something.”
Trent had texted her the afternoon before Cassidy was injured.
Cassidy’s spiraling again. Brock may have to come by later. Don’t panic if you hear something.
Cassidy read the message twice.
The wording made her skin crawl.
Not because Trent had predicted an argument.
Because he had predicted Brock.
Hours before Brock supposedly received an unexpected call from a distressed friend.
Megan began crying.
“I thought he was warning me.”
Cassidy handed the phone back.
“No.”
Frank understood first.
“He was giving you the explanation before you had anything to explain.”
