Chapter 12 - WHAT TRENT WAS REALLY TRYING TO SAVE
The direct confrontation happened six weeks later in a courtroom rather than a kitchen.
Cassidy’s temporary protection order had remained in place pending a fuller hearing.
Trent sat across the aisle beside his attorney.
He looked smaller than Cassidy remembered.
Not weaker.
Just deprived of the house, the family gatherings, and the familiar rooms where he had always controlled the emotional temperature.
When Trent testified, he returned to the same argument.
Cassidy had been unpredictable.
He had been afraid she would take Lydia.
He had contacted Brock because he wanted to prevent things from escalating.
Cassidy’s attorney asked why he warned Megan hours earlier that Brock might come by.
Trent paused.
Then he said he had been worried all day.
“About Cassidy?”
“Yes.”
“Or about what people would believe afterward?”
His lawyer objected.
The judge redirected the question.
There were no theatrical admissions.
No sudden collapse.
But when Cassidy testified, Trent finally looked directly at her.
“You were going to take my daughter,” he said before his attorney stopped him.
Cassidy understood.
That was what he had been protecting.
Not the marriage.
Control.
Cassidy had told Trent that morning she intended to move into an apartment with Lydia temporarily and talk to an attorney.
Trent knew that if Cassidy left calmly, with support and a documented reason, he could no longer control how the separation was described.
So he began describing it first.
To Megan.
To Frank.
To Brock.
By the time Cassidy tried to leave, Trent had created a version of events in which preventing her from going looked protective.
The judge continued restrictions on Trent’s contact pending the family-court process.
Outside the courtroom, Cassidy did not feel triumphant.
She felt exhausted.
Then the county attorney approached her lawyer.
