Chapter 6 - The Mother Who Asked for Silence

Vanessa moved out of the condo she shared with Derek four days after the wedding.

Not because she had broken with him.

Her attorney advised them to live separately while police investigated.

She posted nothing publicly.

Privately, she sent Rachel one message.

You were supposed to get scared, not seriously hurt.

Rachel read it three times before forwarding it to Monica.

No apology.

No denial.

Just a distinction Vanessa apparently believed mattered.

Rachel’s vision slowly improved, but she still saw a gray smear near the edge of her left field of view. Her doctor could not yet promise it would disappear.

She stopped driving at night.

She also stopped working operationally because Diane and the board placed both sisters on paid administrative leave pending the company investigation.

For the first time since her father died, Rachel had no access to daily Mercer Event Group decisions.

It frightened her more than she wanted to admit.

Work had become the place where Rachel knew exactly who she was.

Her mother arrived at her apartment on Friday carrying soup.

Rachel almost did not let her in.

Diane placed the container in the refrigerator and stood awkwardly in the kitchen.

“I should have gone to the hospital with you sooner.”

“You were downstairs protecting the wedding.”

“I was protecting the company.”

“You always make those sound like the same thing.”

Diane sat.

Then she said, “The invoices started before Derek.”

Rachel looked at her.

“What invoices?”

“The questionable ones.”

“How long before?”

Diane rubbed her thumb over her wedding ring.

“After your father died.”

Thomas Mercer’s death had nearly crippled the business. Three major clients left within six months. The company had just signed a lease on a second production kitchen. Payroll was due.

Rachel remembered that period differently.

She remembered tightening budgets, selling unused vans, and slowly stabilizing the company.

Diane remembered the week before that plan began working.

“We were short one hundred and forty thousand dollars,” she said.

“What did you do?”

Diane did not answer directly.

“I need you to understand why Vanessa thought an audit would destroy us.”

Rachel’s stomach tightened.

“What did you do, Mom?”

Diane stood.

“I made a decision after your father died that I thought I could correct before anyone noticed.”

Rachel looked at the woman who had spent a week asking her not to investigate.

For the first time, the fear on Diane’s face made sense.

The fraud had not entered Mercer Event Group with Derek.

He had inherited a secret that was already waiting for someone willing to exploit it.
