Chapter 12 - What Each of Them Was Protecting

The prosecutors arranged separate settlement discussions, but Vanessa requested one controlled family meeting first.

Rachel agreed only with attorneys present.

Derek refused to attend.

That refusal told Vanessa more than another argument would have.

Diane began.

“I was protecting your father’s company.”

Rachel shook her head.

“You were protecting what his company said about you.”

Diane looked wounded.

Rachel continued.

“Dad died. The business struggled. You were allowed to fail.”

“I had sixty employees.”

“And you were allowed to ask for help.”

Diane looked toward Vanessa.

“I asked the wrong daughter.”

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

“You asked the daughter who wouldn’t challenge you.”

Then Rachel asked Vanessa directly.

“What were you protecting?”

Vanessa took a long time.

“At first? Mom.”

“And later?”

“My marriage.”

“And at the wedding?”

Vanessa stared at Rachel’s left eye.

“Myself.”

That answer finally sounded true.

If Rachel exposed the invoices, Vanessa would lose her position, her mother’s trust, possibly the company, and perhaps Derek.

She had convinced herself that hurting Rachel briefly was less catastrophic than losing everything else.

“What did Derek want?” Diane asked.

“Money,” Vanessa said.

Rachel disagreed.

“Control.”

Derek wanted the money, but he also wanted every Mercer woman dependent on a different version of the truth.

Diane believed he was cleaning up her mistake.

Vanessa believed he was protecting Diane.

Rachel believed he was only an overpriced vendor.

He positioned himself between all three.

Monica placed the wedding stills on the table.

One showed Derek blocking Rachel’s exit.

Another showed Vanessa gripping Rachel’s gown.

The final image captured Aaron in the background lowering his camera after noticing the metal fragment.

“You both had opportunities to stop,” Monica said.

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

“Then your next decision matters.”

Prosecutors had offered Vanessa a reduced charge recommendation if she admitted the intentional tampering, explained the financial scheme, and testified truthfully about Derek’s role.

The deal would still carry a criminal conviction.

Vanessa looked at Rachel.

“If I take it, everyone will know what I did.”

Rachel touched the edge of the bandage she no longer needed.

“Everyone already knows what happened.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. They know the wedding version.”

Rachel understood.

The videos had captured humiliation.

The legal record would capture intention.

For the first time, Vanessa would have to choose whether she wanted protection from consequences more than she wanted an accurate truth.
