Chapter 14 - THE LAST TIME MARGARET TRIED TO DEFINE THE TRUTH
Six months after the kitchen incident, Margaret submitted a written statement through her attorney.
Elena expected excuses.
The first page contained several.
She had been worried.
Elena had been overworked.
Noah had always been thin.
Margaret had misunderstood how serious the restrictions became.
Elena almost stopped reading.
Then the tone changed.
I knew he was hungry sometimes.
Elena’s hand tightened around the paper.
I told myself temporary hunger was less dangerous than losing him permanently.
She continued.
I believed if the county questioned Elena, she would stop talking about moving and reduce work.
I believed they would ask me to help.
I wanted that.
Elena closed her eyes.
Noah was playing in the next room with Jason, building a cardboard fort.
She could hear them arguing cheerfully over where the door should go.
The letter continued.
Margaret admitted she had praised Noah when his weight dropped.
She admitted she withheld information from Elena about school concerns.
She admitted she wanted authorities to see her as the stable alternative.
Then came the sentence that mattered most.
I called it protecting him because I could not admit I was afraid nobody would need me anymore.
Elena cried.
Not because the apology repaired anything.
Because after months of manipulation, Margaret had finally described her own behavior without forcing someone else to carry the blame.
Rachel asked whether this meant supervised visits could begin.
Elena said no.
Not yet.
She met with Noah’s therapist.
With Jason.
With her attorney.
With Denise one final time before the county closed its involvement.
Everyone had an opinion.
Elena listened.
Then she made the decision herself.
Margaret would have no direct contact with Noah for the remainder of the school year.
After that, Elena and Jason would reconsider based on Noah’s well-being, Margaret’s sustained treatment, professional recommendations, and whether Noah wanted contact.
It was not punishment.
It was a boundary.
Margaret’s attorney confirmed she accepted it.
No argument.
No new phone number.
