Chapter 1 - THE MEAL SHE WANTED HIM TO LOSE

Margaret ripped the bowl of pasta away from Noah before he could take another bite.

Then she deliberately dumped the food across the front of his blue T-shirt.

Noah froze.

Seven years old, thin enough that the collar hung loose around his neck, he looked at his grandmother as if he already knew crying would make things worse.

“What are you doing?” Elena shouted.

She had come through the back door carrying grocery bags and found her mother standing over her son beside the trash can.

Margaret did not jump.

She did not apologize.

She calmly pushed the empty bowl onto the counter.

“He’s eaten enough.”

Noah’s face crumpled.

Elena dropped the bags.

“He hasn’t even finished dinner.”

Margaret looked directly at her.

“That’s the point.”

Before Elena could process the words, Noah rushed behind her and grabbed the back of her cream sweater.

His voice shook.

“Grandma said I have to look hungry when the people come.”

Elena turned.

“What people?”

Three violent knocks shook the front door.

Margaret smiled.

Not nervously.

Confidently.

“I called Franklin County Children Services.”

Elena stared at her.

Margaret folded her arms.

“They need to see what I’ve been seeing.”

“What exactly have you been seeing?”

“A child wasting away while his mother pretends everything is fine.”

Elena felt something hot rise through her chest.

“You’re the one who just took his food.”

Margaret’s expression barely changed.

Noah pressed his face against Elena’s back.

Then he whispered the sentence that made Elena’s anger disappear beneath something colder.

“She does it before I get weighed too.”

Elena slowly looked over her shoulder.

Noah would not meet her eyes.

Not tonight.

Not once.

Many times.

Elena suddenly remembered every loose waistband.

Every unfinished breakfast Margaret claimed Noah had refused.

Every afternoon her mother said, He already ate at my house.

The pounding came again.

Margaret smoothed her beige cardigan.

“They’re here.”

Elena stepped between her mother and her son.

For the first time in her life, she looked at Margaret and did not see the woman who had helped raise Noah after her divorce.

She saw somebody who had been preparing for this moment.

Elena opened the door herself.
