Chapter 7 - The Scene Someone Wanted Recorded
The camera angle had always covered the patio door and kitchen entrance.
On the day of the dinner, it faced the breakfast table.
Linda told Robert she wanted better footage of a family celebration because his hands had become too unsteady to hold a phone.
But the table was not decorated.
No balloons, flowers, or serving dishes appeared in the camera’s view.
Only Ruby’s chair, the cake, and the narrow aisle where Linda later restrained me.
The repositioning meant Linda wanted something captured.
That discovery complicated the obvious explanation.
If Linda intended to conceal abuse, why point a camera toward it?
Detective Hayes suggested two possibilities.
She may have planned to record Ruby taking the bracelet so Vanessa could accuse her of theft. Or she may have believed the system was not saving footage and wanted only the appearance of surveillance.
Robert remembered Linda complaining that the cloud subscription had expired.
She did not know he had installed a private local server after his stroke because he disliked monthly fees.
The footage might contain more than the assault.
Meanwhile, investigators traced Sunfield’s spending.
Vanessa had used part of the transferred money to cover losses from an event-planning venture she started without telling the family. She had signed contracts for three luxury weddings, accepted deposits, and spent the money on an office, advertising, and personal expenses before vendors were paid.
Refund demands were growing.
Linda discovered the losses months earlier.
Instead of telling Robert, she used the expanded home-equity line to keep Vanessa’s clients quiet.
That explained the financial pressure.
It did not explain why Linda needed Ruby accused of theft.
Then Samuel found a draft letter on Robert’s computer.
He had written it to Whitmore & Vale’s outside accountant.
The letter requested a complete audit and stated that he intended to transfer temporary financial authority to me.
Linda had opened the document two days before the dinner.
If Robert signed it, the transfers to Sunfield would be exposed.
Linda needed to convince him that I was using Ruby to destabilize the family and seize control.
A recorded theft would make my daughter look dishonest.
My reaction would make me look volatile.
Vanessa’s anger was supposed to produce an argument.
Not a fractured bone.
Detective Hayes called after the server copy finished processing.

At minute twelve, Linda entered the empty kitchen carrying Ruby’s teddy bear in one hand and the sunflower bracelet in the other.
