Chapter 1 - The Lie Beside Ruby’s Bed

Vanessa was already lunging over my daughter’s hospital bed when I caught her wrist.

“She stole from me—she got what she deserved.”

I yanked my sister backward before her pointing finger reached Ruby’s bandaged eye.

Ruby recoiled against the pillows, clutching her teddy bear beneath her chin. Six hours earlier, she had been wearing the same yellow dress at my parents’ dining table, excited because Grandma had promised her the first slice of chocolate cake.

Now her left eye was covered in white gauze. A monitor tracked her heartbeat beside the bed.

My mother locked both arms around me from behind.

“Say Ruby fell,” Linda whispered against my ear, tightening her grip. “Or you lose this family.”

My father, Robert, blocked the narrow aisle to the door. He did not look at Ruby. His eyes remained fixed on the tile.

I twisted free and placed myself between my daughter and the three adults who had left her unconscious on a kitchen floor.

My palm struck the tray table beside a sealed evidence bag.

Inside lay a small gold bracelet with a sunflower charm.

“Touch my daughter again,” I told Vanessa, “and I burn every lie you built.”

Her face changed at the word lie.

Detective Marcus Hayes entered carrying a folder and a tablet. He placed both beside the bracelet.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“You have a confused kid, an angry mother, and a broken piece of jewelry. Ruby stole the bracelet, Emily attacked me, and the child fell.”

“That’s not what happened,” I said.

Linda moved closer to her.

“Don’t answer anything else.”

Detective Hayes tapped the tablet.

The screen showed my parents’ kitchen from a high corner near the breakfast nook. Vanessa stood behind Ruby with one hand buried in her hair. My mother was reaching for me. My father was moving toward the aisle.

Then Vanessa drove Ruby’s face into the edge of the table.

The footage lasted less than three seconds.

It was enough to erase the word fell.

Vanessa’s confidence cracked. Robert reached toward the tablet, then stopped.

Detective Hayes looked at Linda.

“Then why did your kitchen record everything?”

My mother went pale.

Not because the camera had captured the attack.

Because she knew it had been running before Ruby ever touched the cake.
