Chapter 11 - THE PLAN ALMOST FAILED BEFORE THE CEREMONY

Vanessa did not cooperate cleanly.

That would have been easier.

She refused to testify voluntarily about every financial conversation.

She insisted lawyers negotiate repayment of her $96,000.

She also claimed she had no intention of helping Emma “take everything.”

Emma replied:

“I’m not asking you to.”

That was the strange new balance.

Emma and Vanessa still disliked each other.

They did not trust each other.

But both had stopped trusting Lucas more.

The document service was arranged for the wedding day because Lucas’s attorney had repeatedly delayed acknowledgment of several business notices.

Caroline disliked the optics.

“So do I,” Emma said.

“Then why go?”

“Because Sterling Pines is my property. He has threatened what happens if I appear there. And I am done being told which rooms I can enter.”

That was emotional.

Caroline allowed it only after practical safeguards were set.

Venue security was notified.

Police were not invited to stage some dramatic arrest.

They became involved because of the existing protective order and the documented indirect threat.

Emma would remain away from Lucas.

Documents would be served through proper channels.

Grace would stay safely strapped to Emma only while Emma was in public areas, with Rachel nearby to take the baby if anything escalated.

No confrontation was planned.

Lucas created one.

When Emma entered the pavilion shortly before the ceremony, he crossed the room fast.

“What are you doing here?”

“Delivering what your attorney stopped accepting.”

Then he saw Grace.

His voice dropped.

“Leave.”

Emma did not.

“I own this property.”

That sentence triggered him.

He reached for the packet.

Emma stepped back.

Security moved in.

Lucas grabbed again.

The physical struggle unfolded in seconds.

Emma shifted Grace away from him, caught Lucas’s momentum, and brought him down without letting his hands near the baby.

Guests screamed.

Someone called 911.

Three local officers already nearby for traffic control at another event entered almost immediately.

That became the scene everyone would remember.

Emma above Lucas.

Grace protected against her chest.

Vanessa on the floor behind them.

Documents fanned across white marble.

But the truth was less cinematic.

Nobody had planned the tackle.

Nobody had planned an arrest.

Nobody knew what police would do with the larger financial evidence.

And Emma’s presence created its own damage.

Guests filmed.

Within an hour, clips spread through local wedding-industry circles.

Sterling Pines became gossip.

Several clients requested reassurance.

One canceled immediately.

Emma sat in a side office after officers separated everyone and realized she had finally reclaimed the right to enter her own property—

and might have damaged the business by doing it.

Truth did not protect her from consequences.

Then Vanessa came into the office without her veil.

She looked at Emma.

“He told me the deed was already signed.”

Emma held up the certified ownership page.

“It wasn’t.”

Vanessa stared at it.

May you like

Then whispered:

“I signed something too.”
