Chapter 10 - VANESSA WASN’T THE WOMAN LUCAS PLANNED TO MARRY FIRST
The major twist came from Vanessa.
Three days before the wedding.
She arrived at Caroline’s office carrying a laptop and asked for a private meeting.
Emma almost refused.
Then Vanessa said:
“There was another woman.”
Rachel, sitting beside Emma, whispered, “Of course there was.”
But Vanessa shook her head.
“Not like that.”
The woman was not another affair.
It was Emma.
Lucas had once planned almost the same financial maneuver with his own wife.
Two years earlier, before Grace and before Vanessa became romantic with him, Lucas proposed restructuring Sterling Pines.
Emma remembered.
He wanted to create a holding company.
Lucas told her it would simplify expansion.
Emma refused because the land was inherited property and she did not want it automatically exposed to operating debt.
At the time, Lucas backed down.
Apparently he never abandoned the concept.
Vanessa opened the laptop.
She had found archived proposals Lucas sent her while she was still only a consultant.
Version one:
Emma contributes Sterling Pines land to a new holding company.
Emma and Lucas jointly guarantee expansion debt.
Lucas serves as managing member.
Vanessa’s consulting firm receives long-term management contract.
Emma stared at the date.
Months before the affair.
Version two appeared after Emma refused.
Land acquisition following marital restructuring.
Lucas control.
Vanessa minority equity.
Emma bought out.
Version three appeared after pregnancy.
Emma exit after family transition.
Then after the blizzard:
Emma abandoned interest / emergency control transfer.
The twist changed everything.
Lucas had not fallen for Vanessa and then decided to steal Emma’s business.
He had been trying to gain control of Emma’s inherited land first.
Vanessa became useful when Emma refused.
Three earlier clues suddenly made sense.
The suspicious transfers began before the affair.
The expansion debt was structured around eventual access to the land.
And Lucas insisted the March wedding occur before the refinance because he needed a new personal and business partnership ready when the old one finally collapsed.
Vanessa had not replaced Emma as the love of Lucas’s life.
She had replaced Emma as the woman expected to validate his ownership plan.
Vanessa looked sick.
“He told me you were holding him back.”
Emma asked:
“And you believed him.”
“Yes.”
“Even after you knew Grace existed.”
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.”
No excuses.
That mattered.
Then Emma asked the harder question.
“Why are you still marrying him Saturday?”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“I don’t know anymore.”
But Emma suspected she did.
Because walking away meant admitting she had spent nearly two years helping Lucas build a future on another woman’s assets.
Vanessa was not innocent.
She had invoiced questionable work.
Accepted the condo.
Ignored Emma’s ownership.
Repeated Lucas’s story.
But she had finally recognized the same thing Emma had six weeks earlier.
Lucas did not need women beside him.
He needed witnesses who would confirm his version of reality.
Emma closed the laptop.
“Cancel the wedding.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“No.”
Rachel stared at her.
“Why?”
Vanessa stood.
“Because I want to see what he does when everything he promised reaches the same room.”
