Chapter 6 - The Family Finally Watches

Nobody had ever heard Thomas speak to Margaret that way.

Not at the mansion.

Not in public.

Not in front of guests.

Margaret’s face tightened, but she lowered the cane an inch.

Daniel stepped forward and calmly took position near it.

Rachel moved toward Thomas, still clutching her belly, tears spilling now that someone safe had arrived.

Thomas reached for her, but did not crowd her.

“Are you hurt?” he asked.

Rachel shook her head. “No. Emily fell. She tried to stop the papers.”

Thomas’s eyes flicked toward the leather folder lying beside the dessert cart.

Margaret recovered quickly.

“Rachel is overwhelmed,” she said. “Emily has been poisoning her against me for weeks.”

Emily let out a weak laugh from the floor. “You mean showing her what you wrote?”

A guest gasped.

Margaret turned. “Be quiet.”

“No,” Thomas said.

One word.

The whole patio shifted around it.

He crouched beside Emily. “Can you sit up?”

Emily nodded. A security officer helped her carefully, while Rachel sank beside her, one hand still protectively over her belly, the other wrapping around Emily’s shoulder.

Margaret watched the image forming in front of everyone: the pregnant wife and the fallen friend, protected from the matriarch instead of corrected by her.

She hated it.

“You’re embarrassing yourself, Thomas,” Margaret said.

Thomas stood.

“No,” he said. “For the first time in this house, someone else is.”

The guests were silent now, but not in Margaret’s favor.

Some were filming discreetly. Others were whispering into phones. A woman who had laughed at Margaret’s jokes all afternoon was backing away from her as if distance could protect her reputation.

Thomas picked up the folder.

He opened it.

His jaw tightened as he read the first two pages.

Then he looked at Rachel.

“You didn’t sign anything?”

Rachel shook her head. “Emily stopped me.”

Thomas looked at Emily, and something like gratitude moved behind the anger.

“Thank you,” he said.

Emily’s eyes filled.

Margaret scoffed. “This is absurd. Those papers were drafted for protection.”

“For control,” Thomas said.

Margaret’s voice sharpened. “You don’t understand what it takes to preserve a family like this.”

“I understand exactly what you preserve,” he said. “Fear.”

The word landed hard.

Margaret’s hand trembled at her side.

Thomas turned to Daniel.

“Play it.”

Margaret’s eyes widened.

Daniel took out a phone, connected it to a small portable speaker from the SUV, and pressed play.

Margaret’s own voice filled the patio.

“If Rachel becomes difficult after the birth, the trust structure gives us leverage.”
