Chapter 1 - The Cane Hit the Patio

Emily was already on the ground when Margaret Whitmore raised the black cane above her shoulder.

The poolside guests froze.

Rachel Whitmore stood three feet away in her sleeveless white maternity dress, both hands locked over her pregnant belly, her face white with shock. The turquoise pool glittered behind her under the bright afternoon sun, too beautiful for what was happening beside it.

“Margaret, don’t!” Rachel screamed.

But Margaret’s face had already hardened into something cold and ugly.

The sixty-eight-year-old matriarch stood in champagne satin and pearls, elegant as a statue, furious as a woman who had never once been told no. Her silver-gray hair was perfectly styled. Her nude heels were planted on the stone patio beside the glass dessert cart, where pastries and fruit plates sat untouched.

Emily Hart, twenty-eight, was curled on the patio floor in a white summer dress, one hand braced against the stone, her dark hair falling over her frightened face.

She had not attacked anyone.

She had not stolen anything.

She had only said one sentence in front of the family.

“She made Rachel sign papers without Thomas knowing.”

That was all it took.

Margaret’s cane came down hard.

Not on Emily’s body.

Beside her.

The sharp crack against stone made every guest flinch.

Emily recoiled, curling away as if the air itself had struck her.

Rachel stumbled forward. “Stop! She’s already down!”

Margaret pointed the cane at Emily like a judge handing down a sentence.

“She brought this on herself.”

Nobody moved.

The cousins near the pool stared. The men in linen suits looked away. A woman beside the dessert cart covered her mouth but said nothing.

Rachel turned toward them, trembling.

“Are you all seeing this?” she asked.

No one answered.

Then, beyond the mansion lawn, the black iron gate began to open.

Two black luxury SUVs rolled fast into the driveway.

Margaret’s eyes flicked toward the movement.

For the first time all afternoon, her expression changed.

Thomas Whitmore stepped out of the first SUV in a black suit, followed by private security officers.

He saw Rachel clutching her belly.

He saw Emily on the patio floor.

May you like

He saw Margaret gripping the cane.

And whatever softness had once belonged to his face disappeared.
