Chapter 9 - THE FIGHT REACHED PEOPLE WHO HAD NEVER BEEN IN THE ROOM

The fallout moved beyond Grant’s house.

Tessa’s agency placed her on temporary administrative leave while reviewing the incident.

She was furious.

“They know I was protecting a baby.”

“They also know you slapped a client’s partner.”

“She grabbed me.”

“I know.”

“That camera makes me look insane.”

Grant hated that she was right.

The visible footage started after the moment that mattered most.

Tessa striking Vivienne looked terrible without context.

Grant offered to pay her legal expenses.

Tessa accepted only after her sister convinced her pride was becoming impractical.

Meanwhile, Vivienne’s employer learned about the police report through gossip.

She worked in luxury residential development.

No formal action was taken.

But she blamed Grant for damage to her reputation.

Grant had not contacted her employer.

That distinction did not matter emotionally.

Their mutual friends divided.

Lauren became one of Grant’s strongest allies.

That created another problem.

Vivienne produced messages Lauren had sent months earlier calling her “a replacement wife with a mood board.”

Cruel.

Embarrassing.

Now Vivienne claimed the entire Mercer family had conspired to drive her out.

Grant confronted Lauren.

“You made this harder.”

“I hated her.”

“That doesn’t make you right.”

Lauren looked wounded.

“You think I caused this?”

“No. I think I spent a year letting everybody behave badly because admitting conflict felt harder.”

His sister looked at him.

That was new.

Grant was finally holding more than one truth at once.

Vivienne could have harmed Noah.

Tessa could have been justified in protecting him and still made a risky choice by striking Vivienne.

Lauren could have correctly distrusted Vivienne while behaving cruelly herself.

Grant could have loved Vivienne and still failed to see what was happening.

Then Tessa’s agency called.

They had reviewed six months of her incident notes.

One entry stood out.

Eight weeks earlier, Tessa documented a bruise on Noah’s shin after Vivienne said he bumped into a coffee table.

The injury itself was minor.

The pediatrician had not been concerned.

But attached to the note was a sentence Tessa had almost forgotten.

Vivienne insisted I delete this because “Grant doesn’t need every little thing turned into a crisis.”

Tessa had refused.

The note remained.

Grant stared at it.

Vivienne had not started worrying about Tessa’s documentation after the living-room fight.

She had been worried about it for months.
