Chapter 8 - GRANT MADE THE DECISION VIVIENNE COUNTED ON HIM AVOIDING
Grant formally ended his relationship with Vivienne.
Not because police had concluded the investigation.
They had not.
Not because every question was answered.
It was not.
He ended it because he no longer trusted her around Noah.
That decision carried consequences immediately.
Vivienne had been living in his home.
Her belongings filled two rooms.
Their social circles overlapped.
They had deposits on a wedding venue in Charleston.
Grant lost almost thirty thousand dollars canceling contracts.
He did not care.
What hurt was explaining the decision to people.
Some believed him.
Some believed Vivienne.
One friend told him privately that Tessa had probably become “too attached.”
Another asked whether Grant was really going to throw away a relationship because of “a nanny dispute.”
Grant stopped trying to persuade them.
Then Vivienne’s attorney sent a formal letter.
Vivienne alleged that Tessa had assaulted her without justification and that Grant had retaliated by ending their relationship.
She also claimed Tessa had become psychologically possessive of Noah after Emma’s death.
The language was polished.
Plausible.
Humiliating.
Grant felt the old impulse to crush it publicly.
His attorney stopped him.
“Facts first.”
So they built a timeline.
Vivienne’s complaint about Tessa’s alleged shove.
The message to Lauren.
The camera-angle change.
The moved vase.
The confrontation.
One problem remained.
No evidence proved Vivienne anticipated Tessa would slap her.
Then Grant found something ordinary.
An appointment reminder in his email.
The morning of the incident, he had been scheduled to meet with an estate planner.
Vivienne knew.
They had argued about it the night before.
Grant had refused her request to discuss changing Noah’s long-term guardianship provisions until after they were married.
His existing plan named Lauren as Noah’s guardian if something happened to him.
Vivienne had taken that personally.
“You’re asking me to become his mother while legally treating me like a stranger.”
Grant had answered:
“You are not his mother.”
He regretted the cruelty of the wording.
But not the boundary.
The next day Vivienne began arranging the room.
For the first time, Grant saw a possible motive larger than jealousy of Tessa.
Vivienne was not only trying to remove the caregiver.
She may have been trying to prove that everyone connected to Emma was dangerous or obstructive.
Lauren.
Tessa.
