Chapter 11 - WHY UNDERSTANDING DIDN’T EARN HER A VISIT

After therapy, Vivian asked:

“Can I see her?”

“No.”

Her face fell.

“I thought this conversation—”

“Was important.”

“Yes.”

“It was.”

“Then what else do you want from me?”

The old Vivian would have sounded angry.

This Vivian sounded exhausted.

I answered:

“Nothing.”

She blinked.

“I’m not giving you assignments until you earn Elodie back.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means you keep doing the work whether she sees you or not.”

That was the test.

Not:

Apologize correctly and receive granddaughter.

Change without guaranteed reward.

Vivian did.

For eight months.

No surprise visits.

No gifts sent directly.

No pressure through Caroline.

She mailed me one birthday card for Elodie and asked whether I thought it was appropriate to give her.

I read it.

Happy eighth birthday. I love you. I am sorry I made you afraid to ask for help. You do not owe me an answer.

I showed Dr. Meyers first.

Then Elodie.

She read it.

“Do I have to call?”

“No.”

She put the card in a drawer.

No call.

Vivian accepted that.

That was progress.

But consequences continued.

The hospital formally barred her from serving as an independent caregiver during any future admission.

The school removed her contact information.

My estate plan remained changed.

Those were not punishments I reversed because she attended therapy.

Trust and administrative access were different things.

She had lost both.

Only one might someday return.
