Chapter 14 - THE LAST TIME I LET HER CALL IT LOVE

I met her at a coffee shop in North Raleigh because public places make people tell fewer grand stories.

Claire wrapped both hands around a paper cup she barely touched.

“I’m signing,” she said before I sat down.

“That’s good.”

“It doesn’t feel good.”

“No.”

She nodded.

For a minute, we just listened to the espresso machine hiss behind the counter.

Then Claire said, “Do you think I’m dangerous?”

The honest answer mattered.

“Yes.”

She flinched but didn’t argue.

“Do you think I loved Nora?”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

I looked out the window at a minivan trying to back out between two SUVs.

“Yes,” I said. “But you used love like it gave you permission.”

Claire cried quietly.

No scene.

No raised voice.

Just a woman finally unable to hide behind urgency.

“I kept waiting for somebody to say June mattered,” she said.

That sentence stayed in the air between us.

I should have said it more.

I knew that.

I also knew what she was doing now—reaching for the grief that connected us, hoping it might soften the facts.

So I answered carefully.

“June mattered. She still matters.”

Claire looked up.

“But this isn’t about whether your grief was real. It’s about what you chose to do with it.”

She closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, she looked older.

“I wrote ‘Family’ on Nora’s drawing,” she said. “Then I erased it.”

I hadn’t told her anyone found that drawing.

“I know.”

“I wanted so badly for it to already be true.”

I stood to leave.

Claire’s voice stopped me.

“Are you filing for divorce?”

I didn’t turn around immediately.

“I’m filing for what keeps Ethan safe.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It’s the only one I have.”

She didn’t ask me to stay.

Maybe that was the first honest restraint either of us had practiced in months.

When I reached the door, she said, “Tell Ethan I never wanted him to be afraid of me.”

I faced her then.

“He already was.”

May you like

She broke at that.

And for the first time, I walked away without trying to put her back together.
