Chapter 1 - THE VOICE BEHIND THE VENT

I came home early because the framing inspection at my job site got pushed to the next morning.

That was the only reason I heard my son whispering in the kitchen.

When I stepped into the room, Ethan was on his knees by the low metal vent under the breakfast nook bench, pushing torn pieces of sandwich bread through the slats with two careful fingers.

He froze when he saw me.

“Ethan…” I said. “What are you doing?”

His whole face changed.

Not guilty.

Scared.

He turned, bread still in one hand, and pointed at the vent like it might explode.

“She said never to tell you,” he whispered. “But the little girl is hungry.”

I thought I had misheard him.

Then Claire rushed in from the hallway so fast she nearly slipped on the tile.

She planted herself in front of the vent, both arms spread wide.

“Ryan, don’t open it.”

There are moments when your brain refuses what your eyes already know.

My wife was blocking a wall vent.

My son was crying.

And from somewhere inside that narrow dark space, I heard a child make a sound so small and hoarse it barely reached the room.

I moved toward the vent.

Claire shoved both hands against my chest.

“Don’t.”

For one second we just stared at each other.

Then a tiny hand appeared between the metal slats.

Pale fingers.

Dirty nails.

Shaking.

A little voice broke through the vent.

“Daddy… help me.”

My knees nearly gave out.

I looked at Claire.

She stepped backward like I’d struck her.

And I knew before I touched the vent that whatever was behind that wall was going to split my family open.
