Chapter 9 - WHEN VANESSA STOPPED DENYING EVERYTHING

Vanessa finally asked to meet Eric.
Not Rachel.
Eric refused.
“If this concerns what happened to Emma, Rachel is there.”
Vanessa nearly canceled.
Then agreed.
They met in a lawyer’s conference room.
Vanessa arrived without Margaret.
That alone was significant.
She looked exhausted.
No red apron.
No theatrical anger.
Just a gray sweater and dark circles under her eyes.
Rachel did not ask about Lily.
She began with Emma.
“Why did you do it?”
Vanessa stared at the table.
“She was in Lily’s chair.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“My mother called me before you arrived.”
Eric leaned forward.
“What did she say?”
“That Rachel had been snooping.”
Rachel frowned.
“In what?”
“Family pictures. Dad’s office. Old things.”
Rachel and Eric exchanged a look.
Margaret somehow knew they had begun noticing patterns even before the kitchen confrontation.
Vanessa continued.
“Mom said you were trying to take things that belonged to Lily.”
Rachel stared at her.
“So you attacked a toddler?”
Vanessa flinched.
“I wasn’t trying to hit Emma.”
“You swung a skillet beside her.”
“I know.”
“Then threatened her afterward.”
Vanessa covered her face.
“I know.”
The repeated words carried no absolution.
Rachel asked:
“What belongs to Lily?”
Vanessa lowered her hands.
“The Cape house.”
Eric stared.
“Our parents’ Cape house?”
Vanessa nodded.
“Mom promised it to her.”
“Why?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because of who Lily is.”
There it was.
Rachel remained still.
“Who is she?”
Vanessa looked at Eric.
“Mom’s granddaughter.”
Eric almost laughed.
“We know that.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don’t.”
Then she said the sentence nobody expected.
“Vincent is Lily’s biological father.”
Eric stood so quickly his chair tipped backward.
Rachel froze.
Vincent.
Margaret’s hidden firstborn son.
Vanessa’s half-brother.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No. Stop. Not like that.”
Eric stared at her in horror.
Vanessa began crying.
“I’m not Lily’s biological mother.”
The entire room shifted again.
Vanessa continued.
“Lily is Vincent’s daughter.”
Rachel slowly sat back.
“Then whose child did you give birth to?”
Vanessa whispered:
May you like
“No one.”
And suddenly the photographs, money, secrecy, chair, bracelet, inheritance promises, and obsessive control rearranged themselves around a completely different truth.
