Chapter 12 - MARGARET’S VERSION OF LOVE

Margaret agreed to meet only after Frank threatened to separate if she refused.
That fact arrived before she did.
Rachel almost canceled.
Then she reconsidered.
Not for reconciliation.
For clarity.
They met at Frank and Margaret’s home.
Neutrality was impossible, but Margaret had insisted.
Rachel brought Eric.
Vanessa came separately.
Lily and Emma were not there.
Margaret sat at the dining table wearing her pearls.
Perfect posture.
Controlled face.
Rachel began:
“Did you tell Vanessa I was trying to take Lily’s inheritance?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you were digging through family matters that were none of your concern.”
Rachel looked at her.
“My daughter became my concern when Vanessa lost control around her.”
Margaret glanced toward Vanessa.
“You should never have used the skillet.”
Vanessa stared.
Not I’m sorry.
Not Emma could have been badly hurt.
Just tactical disapproval.
Rachel saw Vanessa recognize it too.
Eric asked:
“Did you plan the confrontation?”
“No.”
“Did you want Vanessa to confront Rachel?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Because your wife does not understand what Lily is owed.”
Rachel spoke quietly.
“Tell me.”
Margaret’s composure cracked.
“She is owed what Vincent never had.”
There it was.
Margaret explained the childhood she had never discussed.
Her parents arranging Vincent’s placement.
Years of pretending he was a cousin.
Christmases where she watched him across a room and could not call herself his mother.
The first birthday she secretly mailed him money.
The day he discovered the truth.
The years he refused contact.
Then Lily.
Margaret cried.
“She was my chance to do something right.”
Rachel understood the emotion.
Then rejected the logic.
“Lily is not a correction.”
Margaret looked offended.
“She deserves security.”
“So does Emma.”
“No one said otherwise.”
Rachel leaned forward.
“You did. Every time you taught this family that Lily’s wants came before everybody else’s boundaries.”
Margaret stiffened.
“That is ridiculous.”
“The chair.”
“A tradition.”
“The Cape house.”
“My property.”
“The gifts.”
“My choice.”
“Vanessa attacking Emma because you convinced her Lily was under threat.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“I did not tell her to hurt anyone.”
“No.”
Rachel nodded.
“You just lit the match and decided the fire belonged to somebody else.”
Eric looked at his mother.
“Did you send Rachel the warning?”
Margaret went still.
Everyone noticed.
Rachel’s pulse jumped.
Margaret whispered:
“No.”
Frank finally spoke from the doorway.
May you like
“I did.”
And for the second time in a week, the person Rachel had assumed was standing outside the secret stepped directly into the center of it.
