Chapter 9 - When the Marriage Reached the Office
The financing collapsed on Wednesday.
Not the company.
Not yet.
But the proposed deal requiring Claire's guarantee was dead.
Ethan’s company froze hiring and delayed payments to several vendors while negotiating with its existing lender.
Word traveled.
By Friday, Ethan’s younger brother had called Claire.
His mother called next.
Both began with concern about the baby.
Both eventually reached the company.
Claire listened until Ethan’s mother said, “Whatever happened between you two, sixty families shouldn't pay for it.”
Claire ended the call politely.
That sentence stayed with her.
For years, Ethan had framed his risk-taking as responsibility.
Employees depended on him.
Contractors depended on him.
His brother had invested money.
His mother had guaranteed an early loan.
Every new obligation became a reason the next person had to rescue the previous one.
Claire finally saw the machinery.
Caroline’s review produced another uncomfortable detail.
Claire had already signed one document eight months earlier giving Ethan temporary authority to negotiate insurance and maintenance matters for her rental properties while she dealt with severe morning sickness.
The authority did not permit borrowing against them.
But Ethan had shown the document to his lender as evidence that Claire was “actively integrating family assets.”
Not illegal.
Not fraudulent.
Misleading enough to matter.
Claire remembered something Monica had said.
He said your marriage was finished.

Then Caroline found an email that changed the story again.
