Chapter 12 - What Ethan Was Actually Afraid Of

They met at a quiet café near Claire’s obstetrician’s office.

Ethan looked thinner.

His company had entered a lender-supervised restructuring process.

He had sold his second car.

His brother had stepped away from daily operations.

None of it looked like punishment imposed by Claire.

It looked like consequences finally arriving without someone intercepting them.

“I loved you,” Ethan said.

Claire nearly interrupted.

He corrected himself.

“I love you.”

“Then why Monica?”

Ethan stared at his coffee.

“Because around her, I wasn't failing.”

Claire waited.

Monica had met Ethan when his company was booming.

She admired him.

Needed him.

Believed every promise because the promises made him look powerful.

Claire knew his debts.

His fears.

His father's criticism.

His failed projects.

“With you,” Ethan said, “I felt like eventually you'd see I wasn't the man you married.”

“So you became someone worse instead?”

He accepted that.

Then Claire asked about the sentence Monica had thrown across the foyer.

Once she was gone.

Ethan closed his eyes.

He had said it nine months earlier.

He had told Monica that after Claire guaranteed the refinancing and after the baby was born, he would separate from Claire and set Monica up in an apartment.

By the time he ended the affair, he no longer intended to do any of it.

But he never withdrew the promise cleanly.

He kept feeding Monica enough hope to keep her silent.

Claire understood the ugliest part.

Ethan hadn't wanted Claire gone.

He had wanted every problem to disappear without losing anything himself.
