Chapter 3 - THE ACCOUNT I NEVER OPENED

Marcus was released pending a preliminary hearing but barred from contacting Lily or me.
I stayed with Elena while the locks were changed.
Three days later, I opened my work laptop and reviewed every account connected to our household.
Fear had trained me to avoid looking too closely.
My profession trained me to notice what fear wanted hidden.
Marcus had transferred nearly $86,000 from our joint savings over eighteen months. The money moved through small consulting payments into a company called Marlowe Hospitality Group.
The listed owner was Nolan.
The company had no employees, office or legitimate revenue.
It did have six investors.
Every guest who had watched Marcus strike me.
Marcus had not invited friends over merely to celebrate Lily’s birth. They were meeting to discuss a business funded with my money.
I found digital loan documents bearing my forged signature. They used our home as collateral even though Marcus had no ownership interest in the property.
One application described me as an unemployed dependent.
Another claimed I had authorized Marcus to manage my finances because pregnancy had affected my judgment.
He had been preparing to take control of my assets before Lily was born.
Elena reviewed the documents without interrupting.
“This is bigger than domestic violence.”
“I know.”
“What was the money for?”
The company had leased an unfinished restaurant near Columbus. Marcus told investors he would contribute the building and startup capital.
He owned neither.
The plan depended on convincing me to transfer my house into a marital trust.
When I repeatedly refused, he intensified the pressure.
My postpartum recovery gave him what he believed was a final opportunity.
If I appeared unstable, he could ask a court for temporary control of our finances and custody of Lily.
The dinner had been designed to produce witnesses.
I was supposed to become emotional.
Marcus was supposed to remain calm.
The hidden phone destroyed that version.
Detective Wells obtained a warrant for the group messages.
Nolan had written before arriving:
Keep recording if she starts yelling. Marcus needs proof she’s unsafe with the baby.
Brooke replied:
What if she doesn’t react?
Marcus answered:
She will. I know how to push her.
The slap had not been included in their plan.
But the humiliation had.
Brooke contacted Elena that evening.
“I need to correct my statement,” she said.
She admitted Marcus had hit me and grabbed my hair. She also revealed that Nolan had collected everyone’s phones after the deputies arrived and instructed them to repeat the same story.
“Why did you agree?” I asked.
Her voice broke.
“Marcus invested my husband’s retirement money in the restaurant. Nolan said we would lose everything if he went to jail.”
“You watched him strike a woman four days after childbirth.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
Brooke agreed to testify.
Before ending the call, she warned us about a second document.
Marcus had prepared an emergency custody petition.

It claimed Elena and I were planning to take Lily out of Ohio.
The supporting witness was my mother.
