Chapter 2 - THE PEOPLE WHO WATCHED

Marcus tried to pull me to my feet before Elena entered.

“Tell her you fell.”

My knees shook beneath me.

“You hit me in front of six witnesses.”

He glanced toward his friends.

None of them met my eyes.

The pounding came again.

“I called the sheriff,” Elena shouted. “Open this door now.”

Marcus’s face changed instantly. His rage disappeared beneath the frightened smile he used whenever consequences arrived.

He opened the door.

Elena stood on the porch with two county deputies. Rain clung to her dark hair, and she still wore the navy suit she used in court.

She saw me on the floor beside Lily’s cradle.

Then she saw the blood on my lip.

“Claire?”

Marcus stepped between us.

“She got emotional and slipped.”

Elena’s eyes moved toward the guests.

“Did every one of you see her slip?”

Silence.

One woman, Brooke, stared at the carpet.

Nolan said, “It happened fast.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

A deputy separated Marcus from me while Elena knelt carefully beside Lily’s cradle. She did not touch me until I nodded.

“Are you hurt anywhere besides your face?”

“My abdomen.”

The ambulance arrived minutes later.

At the hospital, doctors confirmed that my surgical incision had partially reopened when I fell. I needed treatment but no additional operation. Lily was examined too and had not been injured.

Marcus was detained for questioning.

His friends remained at the house while deputies interviewed them separately.

Their stories immediately contradicted one another.

Nolan claimed Marcus had raised his hand only to defend himself.

Brooke said she had been looking toward the dining room.

Another guest insisted he arrived after I fell, although the security camera showed him entering nearly an hour earlier.

Elena sat beside my hospital bed.

“Your phone captured everything.”

“Even the slap?”

“The sound, what he said afterward and him ordering you to lie.”

I closed my eyes.

“I stayed too long.”

“You survived long enough to press the button.”

That did not feel heroic.

For months, Marcus had monitored my spending, criticized my clothes and complained whenever Elena visited. During my pregnancy, he started transferring money from our shared account without explanation.

Each incident seemed small when viewed alone.

Together, they formed a cage.

The next morning, Detective Aaron Wells brought me a copy of the initial report.

Marcus claimed I had attacked him after becoming emotionally unstable following childbirth. According to his statement, he pushed me away only to protect Lily.

“He’s using postpartum depression,” I said.

“He’s trying to,” Wells replied.

Then he placed a clear evidence bag on the table.

Inside was Marcus’s phone.

The passcode screen displayed a message preview from Nolan:

We all agreed she fell. Delete the group chat.

The witnesses had not merely remained silent.

They had already begun coordinating the lie.
