Chapter 6 - CLAIRE CAME HOME WITH A CAMERA CREW
A week after the arrests, Claire appeared outside our neighborhood gate with two reporters.
She wore a pale blue dress and carried a stuffed bear for Mateo.
Her attorney stood beside her.
The reporters filmed while she cried about being separated from her baby.
“I have been prevented from entering my own home,” she said. “My husband is using his influence to punish me for a parenting disagreement.”
Officer Riley called and told me not to approach.
I stayed inside.
Then Claire looked directly into the camera.
“My stepdaughter has struggled since her mother’s death. I love Valerie, but she needs help.”
Valerie heard the statement from the hallway.
“She’s still saying I’m bad.”
I turned off the television.
“She’s saying what protects her.”
“Will people believe her?”
“Some might.”
Her face fell.
I knelt beside her.
“But the people making decisions will see the evidence.”
That afternoon, Claire’s public performance collapsed.
The local station obtained a copy of the protective-order findings. They did not show Valerie’s face, but they reported that security footage contradicted Claire’s version of events.
The reporters left the gate.
Claire stayed.
She screamed my name through the intercom until officers arrived.
Then she made the mistake that changed the case.
She called Nancy from the patrol car, not realizing the jail system recorded every conversation.
“I told you Daniel would turn on me,” Claire said.
Nancy answered, “He was supposed to sign before he saw the kitchen footage.”
“I deleted it.”
“You deleted it from the app, not the server.”
Claire began crying.
“What happens now?”
“Do not admit why we needed Valerie out.”
Investigators listened carefully.
Claire lowered her voice.
“If he finds the insurance papers, we’re done.”
There were no life-insurance papers in the house.
There was a new policy application stored in Nancy’s email.
The proposed insured person was me.
The beneficiary was Claire.
The policy was worth five million dollars.
That alone was not illegal.
The attached financial plan was.
It assumed Claire would control Mateo’s inheritance and serve as Valerie’s guardian if I died.
Nancy had written:
Once Valerie is placed, no one will challenge your control of the estate.
There was no evidence they planned to kill me.
But the documents proved the guardianship scheme was part of a larger attempt to gain control over both children’s money if something happened to me.
I thought back to all the times Claire pressured me to increase my coverage.
She called it protecting the family.
She meant protecting her access to it.
The next morning, I filed for divorce.
