Chapter 4 - THE PICTURES CLAIRE HAD BEEN SAVING
Detectives searched Claire’s phone under a warrant two days later.
They found hundreds of photographs of Valerie.
Valerie holding Mateo while he cried.
Valerie standing beside spilled food.
Valerie asleep on the sofa with the baby carrier still strapped around her.
Each image had been taken after Claire placed her in that position.
But the captions told a different story.
Valerie refuses to follow safety rules.
Valerie behaves aggressively when Mateo needs attention.
Valerie may be developing serious emotional problems.
Claire had emailed the photographs to a family-law attorney.
The messages began before Mateo was born.
Claire wrote that Valerie resented the pregnancy and might be unsafe around the baby.
She asked how a child could be placed in residential treatment without the father’s consent.
The attorney responded that there would need to be documented behavioral concerns and professional evaluations.
Claire began creating the documentation.
The camera footage showed her provoking arguments, removing food, and waking Valerie after midnight to help with Mateo.
Then she photographed the exhaustion.
She created the problem and recorded only the result.
Detective Riley placed a folder in front of me.
“Do you know about the Mercer Family Trust?”
My late wife, Anna, had inherited the house from her parents.
After she died, the property and most of her investments went into a trust for Valerie.
I managed it until Valerie turned twenty-five.
Claire could live in the house while married to me, but she had no ownership rights.
“She asked me to add Mateo,” I said.
“Did you?”
“I created a separate trust for him.”
“Was she angry?”
“She said I was treating our children differently.”
I explained that Mateo would inherit from me. The house belonged to Valerie because it came from her mother’s family.
Riley opened another message.
Claire had written to her mother:
If Daniel declares Valerie unsafe and signs the guardianship petition, I can become co-trustee. Once she is placed, we control the property.
My vision blurred.
This was not an overwhelmed mother losing patience.
It was a plan.
Claire intended to have Valerie labeled unstable, removed from the house, and placed under a guardianship Claire could influence.
My daughter had been carrying Mateo because Claire wanted photographs showing she handled him irresponsibly.
The spilled milk had been staged.
The exhaustion had been staged.
Even the bruises were useful to her.
“She wanted an accident,” I said.
Riley chose his words carefully.
“She created circumstances in which one could occur.”
I stood and walked toward the window.
For months, Claire told me Valerie was dangerous around Mateo.
The truth was worse.
Claire had repeatedly put both children in danger because she needed evidence that my seven-year-old daughter could not be trusted.
There was one message we could not explain.
Claire had written:
Once Daniel sees the basement video, he will sign anything.
I looked at Riley.
“What basement video?”
