Chapter 3 - What the Nurses Had Documented

The hospital placed an immediate visitor restriction on my room.

A patient advocate named Grace Holloway photographed the reopened incision, documented Linda’s statements, and asked whether I wanted the hospital to report the assault.

“Yes,” I said.

Daniel looked at me but did not object.

A Columbus police officer arrived an hour later. He did not promise an arrest or dramatic justice. He took separate statements from me, Daniel, and the nurses, then explained that the report would be reviewed with my medical records.

Linda had already left the property.

Grace checked the electronic visitor log. Someone had entered my room number into the hospital’s guest-registration system twenty-seven minutes before the attack.

Linda had used a six-digit access code sent to Daniel’s phone.

Daniel frowned at the screen.

“I didn’t give her that.”

“Did anyone else have your phone?” Grace asked.

He reached into his suit pocket.

The phone was not there.

He searched his jacket, then the chair beside my bed.

“I had it downstairs.”

“Where downstairs?”

“In the surgical waiting room.”

“With your mother?”

He did not answer.

The nurse who had cared for me after surgery confirmed that she had given only Daniel a private update. She had explained that the surgeons began laparoscopically but needed a slightly larger incision on the lower-right side because the appendix had ruptured.

Daniel had asked whether he could take a photograph of the bandage so he would remember the wound-care instructions.

I had still been unconscious.

“Did you take one?” I asked.

His eyes moved toward Grace.

“It was medical information. I wasn’t taking a picture of you.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

“On my phone.”

The phone he had left in a waiting room with Linda.

The first consequence of the assault was physical. I needed another procedure because she had struck me.

The second was harder to name.

I no longer trusted my husband’s version of how his mother had reached me.
