Chapter 10 - The Husband Who Opened the Door

Daniel did not send Linda to my room because he believed she would apologize.

He sent her because he wanted me to protect her.

While I was in surgery, the surgeon had explained that the appendix had likely ruptured after hours of worsening symptoms. Daniel immediately understood that the delay at the venue mattered.

Linda understood it too.

She began panicking about the catering manager, the incident report, and the possibility that I would accuse her of interfering with emergency care.

Daniel tried to calm her.

He sent the photograph of my bandage as proof that I was truly ill. Then he told her that I was angry, medicated, and likely to blame her when I woke.

Linda replied:

You need to make her say I didn’t stop anyone.

Daniel answered:

I’ll talk to her. Come up after. We need to keep this inside the family.

That message changed the meaning of everything.

Linda’s knowledge of the incision was not an accident.

Daniel’s arrival during the assault was not a coincidence. Natalie had seen Linda storm toward the elevators and warned him that she was furious. He followed her only after realizing the confrontation might become ugly.

He reached my room seconds too late.

“I never thought she’d touch you,” he said.

“You knew she wanted to pressure me.”

“I thought she’d apologize and ask you not to file anything.”

“You sent her into my room while I was sedated so the two of you could control what I said.”

He lowered his head.

“I was trying to keep the family from blowing apart.”

“The family had already blown apart. You were trying to keep anyone from seeing it.”

Daniel’s betrayal did not erase the fact that he stopped the second strike.

It made that act smaller.

He had opened the door, then wanted credit for standing in it.

Monica asked whether he would provide a truthful statement about the messages, the delayed ambulance, and the visitor code.

Daniel looked at his attorney.

His attorney told him the decision was his.

If he admitted what he had done, Linda’s position would become far worse. His own credibility in the protection-order hearing would be damaged.

If he continued denying it, the account records and Natalie’s tablet could contradict him.

I did not ask him to choose me.

I asked him to choose the truth.

He requested forty-eight hours.

I told Monica not to give him more.
