Chapter 7 - WHAT VANESSA HAD PROMISED
The second layer emerged from canceled events.
When Eleanor revoked commercial access, calls began reaching the property manager.
One came from a production company.
They were not asking about a single dinner.
They had a six-month location agreement.
Eleanor’s attorney requested the contract.
Vanessa had promised the Bel Air mansion as the primary filming location for a streaming lifestyle series called House Standard.
The production had planned to film four weeks over six months.
Vanessa would appear as design host.
Victor would occasionally demonstrate Hayes House technology.
Compensation to VHH Experiences:
$420,000.
Eleanor read the number twice.
The contract identified Vanessa as “authorized property representative.”
Not owner.
That distinction saved her from one lie and exposed another.
She did have administrative access when she signed.
She did not have authority to commit the property to six months of filming.
Victor had known about the show.
He thought it was a branding opportunity Vanessa negotiated through sponsors.
“She told me the location was free because we lived there.”
Eleanor almost admired the circular logic.
Vanessa used Eleanor’s house.
Called access free.
Collected the fee through her own company.
Then used enough proceeds to subsidize Victor’s business that he never asked why the arrangement worked.
Another fact emerged.
Vanessa had already received a $105,000 production advance.
Much of it was gone.
Part to Hayes House.
Part to event vendors.
Part to a personal credit-card balance Vanessa had hidden.
If the location agreement collapsed, VHH Experiences could owe significant repayment.
That was why Vanessa panicked when Eleanor’s thumb moved toward the owner-control option at the birthday party.
Not because she feared losing a glamorous bedroom.
She feared losing a contract she had already spent.
Eleanor called her.
Vanessa answered.
“You’ve figured out the show.”
“Yes.”
“Then you know canceling it hurts Victor too.”
“Everything hurts Victor when somebody stops paying for him.”
Vanessa went quiet.
“That’s cruel.”
“No.”
Eleanor looked at the cracked compass.
“Cruel was laughing after he hit me.”
Vanessa’s breathing changed.
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re scared.”
“Both can be true.”
Eleanor did not disagree.
That was what made Vanessa harder to dismiss as a simple villain.
