Chapter 12 - WHAT THE MANSION MEANT TO EACH OF THEM

The final family confrontation took place in David Kim’s conference room.
Eleanor chose neutral territory.
Victor arrived alone.
Vanessa came with her attorney.
The agenda concerned occupancy, reimbursement, and return of property access.
Emotion ignored the agenda.
Vanessa accused Eleanor of enjoying the collapse.
“You finally get the house back and your son crawling.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“If I wanted him crawling, I would’ve kept paying for the floor.”
Victor flinched.
Vanessa stared at Eleanor.
“You act like you’re different from me.”
“I am.”
“You built the first lie.”
That one landed.
Eleanor did not defend herself.
Vanessa continued.
“You let him live in a house he didn’t own because it made you feel needed.”
Victor turned toward his mother.
Eleanor slowly nodded.
“Partly.”
She hated admitting it.
Thomas’s death had left the house enormous and quiet.
When Victor and Vanessa moved in, life returned.
Dinner.
Footsteps.
Music.
Complaints about parking.
Eleanor told herself she was helping Victor.
She had also been protecting herself from loneliness.
“I should have made the arrangement clear from the beginning.”
Victor looked down.
Vanessa’s anger softened for half a second.
Eleanor asked her:
“And you?”
“What?”
“What were you protecting?”
Vanessa stared through the glass wall.
“I grew up watching bills decide where we lived.”
Her voice changed.
“I promised myself I would never be the woman waiting for some man to tell me whether we could keep the house.”
“So you took control of mine.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Victor spoke last.
“I wanted people to look at me the way they looked at Dad.”
Eleanor felt tears rise.
Thomas had spent forty years working, failing, borrowing, recovering, arguing with banks, and making mistakes Victor never saw.
Victor remembered only the finished man.
“Your father hated that people thought it was easy.”
Victor looked at her.
“I made it easy to think.”
“Yes.”
The mansion meant something different to all three of them.
Eleanor: continuity.
Vanessa: safety.
Victor: proof.

None had treated it simply as a house.
That was why it had become powerful enough to damage all of them.
