Chapter 8 - Daniel Refuses to Let Another Woman Decide for Lily
Daniel retained a separate attorney specializing in custody and stepparent adoption.
Not Vanessa’s attorney.
Not Claire’s recommendation.
His own.
He gave her everything.
Emma’s treatment history that Daniel legally possessed.
Claire’s postcards.
The timeline.
Vanessa’s behavior at the wedding.
Lily’s therapist’s concerns.
The attorney, Rebecca Shaw, was careful.
“Do not treat Emma’s recent stability as automatic evidence that immediate reunification is appropriate.”
“I’m not.”
“And don’t treat prior illness as automatic evidence she’s permanently unsafe.”
Daniel nodded.
“What do I do?”
“You build a process around Lily.”
That meant no surprise reunion.
No dramatic mother-at-the-door moment.
Emma would need to consent to appropriate verification.
Current treatment information through authorized releases.
A clear history of stability.
Discussion with professionals about what contact could safely look like.
Daniel hated how slow it sounded.
Then realized slowness might be exactly what Lily needed.
He made his irreversible choice.
The stepparent adoption was off the table.

He told Vanessa in a mediation room.
Her face emptied.
“You promised.”
“I said I wanted to explore it.”
“You told Lily I might adopt her.”
Daniel felt ashamed.
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“I built my life around that child.”
“I know.”
“So Emma sends Claire a few postcards and I become disposable?”
“No.”
“That is exactly what this is.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“This is me refusing to make Lily legally lose one mother before we understand whether that mother is actually trying to return.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“She left.”
“Yes.”
“I stayed.”
“Yes.”
“That should mean something.”
“It does.”
Daniel’s voice softened.
“It just doesn’t mean everything.”
Vanessa stared at him.
For years, she had understood love as the reward for staying.
Daniel was beginning to understand why that belief terrified her.
But he could not make Lily responsible for reassuring an adult.
Vanessa stood.
“If Emma comes back, Lily will be destroyed.”
“Maybe.”
The answer stopped her.
Daniel continued.
“Or maybe not.”
“You’re willing to risk your daughter for a woman who abandoned her?”
“No.”
“I’m willing to stop pretending we know the outcome before we do the work.”
